The aim of the master's program in Anglophone Modernities in Literature and Culture is to deepen your knowledge of the complex problems of the various aspects of modernity in the English-speaking world. They acquire the ability to critically and productively receive the conflict between competing offers of interpretation, description and evaluation from different historical, disciplinary or regional contexts. The international orientation of this master's program leads to multi-perspective work and increases your intercultural competence. You will also be able to do independent scientific work and be able to present your study results in a scientifically adequate manner both in a master's thesis and in oral presentations.

The intercultural competence of the students, especially with regard to different scientific cultures, is deepened by a stay at a foreign university or by mentoring a guest student. The students get an insight into the cultural character of their own academic socialization and the plurality of scientific and university systems. In this way, they acquire the ability to critically reflect on and put into perspective their own problems and perspectives and deepen their ability to present and communicate differences and similarities with partners from other cultural contexts.

Students experience the interplay of theory and practice by reflecting on the range of different methods and developing individual or collaborative strategies for developing and implementing a research program. Getting to know selected areas of application in science and research management, in communicating scientific content and arguments, in independent archiving work or in the preparation and publication of publications helps the students to establish professional contacts.

In the sense of the English term "modernity", which describes both the historical epoch of modern times and the specific social experience of modernity, literary and cultural phenomena are the focus of this course. With the help of approaches from literary studies and cultural studies, you will deal with different methodological procedures and their explanatory power and apply these methods to modern subject areas.

In order to reflect on the differences between regional academic cultures, spend a semester at one of the University of Potsdam's partner universities or at a university of your choice abroad and prepare a detailed report on your experiences abroad. In exceptional cases, you can also replace the stay abroad with a semester as a mentor of international guest students at the University of Potsdam and a detailed journal about your experiences gained during this time.

    With 5.342 enrolled students in the winter semester 2017/18, the Faculty of Arts is the largest of six faculties at the University of Potsdam. Its campus Am Neuen Palais unites ten departments and one scientific institution: the Departments of Jewish Studies and Religious Studies, Philosophy, Planning of Lifestyle – Ethics – Religion, History and Classical Philosophy, German Studies, English and American Studies, Romance Studies, Slavic Studies, Arts and Media, the School of Jewish Theology, and the Theodor-Fontane-Archive. The faculty – grounded in the tradition of the German Universität – is characterized by an encompassing canon of academic disciplines in the philosophical, philological, historical, and aesthetic sciences and well as sciences concerned with religions. These are offered and undertaken both as mono-disciplinary studies and in various combinations of subjects, in order to ensure both profound insight and comprehensive orientation.
