Учебный план программы обучения "English (teaching primary school/teaching subject)"

The range of courses consists of the various subjects - English Linguistics and English Literature -, from the Didactics of English language and literature, language practice and regional studies/cultural studies.

Linguisticsresearches the English language in all its dimensions and manifestations. The English language is understood as a complex, globally distributed medium of communication, which - driven by its use - is constantly changing and at a certain point in time is always available in many different variants at the same time. One goal of linguistic research is to depict this diversity in language structure, language use and language knowledge and to identify and explore the principles according to which it comes about. The social and situational contexts in which language is used play just as important a role as the cognitive processes that take place during language learning and language use, and the historical developments that a language like English has gone through up to now.
To study language in its entirety, linguistics uses many different methods, from working with historical manuscripts to analyzing large amounts of text using IT and statistical methods, to surveys or laboratory experiments.
Through the linguistic training as part of the teacher training course, students acquire extensive, scientifically sound knowledge of the main subject of their future work in school - the English language. At the same time, the wide range of options for setting individual priorities in this subject area also opens up perspectives far beyond the school context.

Literary Studies deals with English-language literary texts from the Middle Ages to the present day. Other media varieties of literature such as films are also of interest here. Literary analysis attempts to grasp how texts are structured in literary terms, i.e. it analyzes their formal, linguistic and stylistic peculiarities and asks about their effect or their genre or epochal historical contexts. In addition, literary studies are also interested in the question of which theoretical basic assumptions and thought mechanisms our perception of literature is controlled by, and thus places the analysis of specific individual texts in a broader cultural and media studies context. The focus of English studies is on texts that were created in Great Britain and Ireland as well as English-language literature from former British colonies and other parts of the world. North American Studies focuses on the literatures of the USA and Canada, which can also be the subject of the teacher training course.

In research and teaching, English Didactics deals with aspects of teaching and learning the English language as well as English-speaking cultures and literatures. The requirements of the teaching degree courses are at the center of the range of courses. Prospective teachers learn the theoretical and empirical basics of foreign language teaching in the didactic studies and gain insights into the practical design of effective language learning situations. In addition to these central skills and knowledge, the didactic course also provides insights into the development of English teaching, its goals and its educational policy context.

The courses in the practical language department enable student teachers to perfect their practical language skills in oral and written language use and thus serve as a language role model for their future students.

The Cultural Studies courses cover various aspects of history, social and political life in the United Kingdom and the United States. In this context, the contrastive approach plays a particularly important role: students are encouraged to compare their newly acquired knowledge of the English-speaking cultural area with the conditions in Germany. In this way, intercultural competence is built on a solid knowledge base. Students can apply and deepen these during a longer stay abroad in an English-speaking country.
