Программа обучения "Environmental Governance" в University of Freiburg

Environmental Governance

The M.Sc. -programme Environmental Governance (MEG) was established in 2005 to train leaders to be able to reconcile different social perspectives with regard to the sustainable use of environmental resources as a basis for sustainable development - for any development, at any scale from local to global, and in any context worldwide. Every year, around 35 outstanding students are selected based on criteria of excellence and geographical representation.

Описание программы обучения "Environmental Governance"

Since its establishment in 2005, the MEG programme has been training academics in the broader field of Environmental Governance, understood as new modes of social co-ordination among market, state and civil society actors.

MEG is exceptional in its highly interdisciplinary approach: at its core it is social-scientific, but it provides students with basic ‘scientific literacy’ in the more technical aspects of pressing environmental challenges.

The programme has been developed with a clear ambition to be ranked among the top 10 international study programmes in the field of sustainability, society and environment worldwide.

About 35 students are selected each year based on criteria of excellence and geographical representation (industrialized countries, countries in transition, developing countries as well as geographic regions). The Programme targets future leaders with grand, innovative ideas about environmental governance arrangements beyond the traditional functional, structural and territorial boundaries (‘sustainability designers’). The ideal MEGie embraces and understands the complexities of sustainable development, but is also capable of finding ways to implement solutions in organisations, enterprises and administrations in a context-sensitive manner (‘sustainability facilitators’).

MEG is accredited in accordance with international standards for higher education. In 2006, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) acknowledged the programme as a Development-Related Postgraduate Course and thus offers a limited number of DAAD/EPOS scholarships.

Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Environmental Governance"

Our M.Sc. programme qualifies for jobs as intermediaries in the field of sustainable development and sustainable resource management with

  • International and national organisations and administrations focusing on sustainable development / sustainable use of resources (e.g. World Bank, UNEP, national ministries, NGO)s;
  • Companies for which a commitment to the principles of sustainability has become a central strategic competitive advantage. (e.g. industry, utilities, insurance companies and banks);
  • Projects aimed at planning and implementing successful future development schemes based on the sustainable utilisation of natural resources (at local, regional or national levels);
  • Science and research centres.

At the same time, the programme offers further education to leaders (politics, industry, public administration) from transitional or developing countries and members of governmental and non-governmental development organisations, as well as banks and insurance companies.

Стажировки и практика в программе обучения "Environmental Governance"

An internship of seven weeks incorporated into the curriculum.

Учебный план программы обучения "Environmental Governance"

The MEG study programme is designed as a two-year (4 semesters), full-time programme (120 ECTS). It aims at:

Realizing - The development of a sound knowledge base of the most pressing environmental issues facing the planet and their underlying societal causes;

Understanding - The reflection on human-environment interactions from a wide spectrum of disciplines, approaches, and world-views;

Managing - The provision of methodological knowledge and skills for the context-sensitive design and management of environmental governance processes.

Teaching is organised in three-week block modules. All teaching modules conclude with a graded exam or project. Students earn 5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits upon successful completion of each module. The modules are classified as either core or elective. In total, 120 credits are required for the successful completion of the programme. An internship of seven weeks and a master thesis are also incorporated into the curriculum.

A typical week of a module consists of approximately 25 hours of lectures. It is expected that students spend about the same amount of time on work related to the course outside of the normal lecture hours. The yearly workload is 1800 hours.

An important feature of the modularised course system is that the students play an active role at all levels, including teaching and research. The course system does not only convey specialised knowledge, but also trains students to handle scientific methods with confidence. Key qualifications are supported through a number of techniques, such as discussions, presentations, working groups and written assignments.

The structure and content of each module are flexible; in most cases courses are organised by more than one lecturer. The number of participants in each course is limited to ensure small effective student groups.

Students can also choose to replace up to two elective modules with a selected topic.

All modules are taught in English.

    Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources
    University of Freiburg

    The Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources comprises forest, environmental and earth sciences as well as geography and offers a range of BSc-, MSc-, and PhD degrees in these fields.

    Research in the Faculty focusses on sustainable use and protection of natural resources, the adaptation of ecosystems and human-environment systems to global change, sustainable development, and natural hazards and risks.

    Currently, larger research groups work on questions related to the development of a bio-based economy, on the nutrition of ecosystems, the conservation of biodiversity, and on geohazards. Employing inter- and transdisciplinary approaches, the faculty contributes to the production of scientific knowledge that connects to civil society and politics.

    Методика оценки заявок

    Decisive for the calculation of the applicant's procedural grade is the overall grade of the university degree shown as a decimal number in accordance with Section 3 Paragraph 1 No. 1 or the arithmetic mean of the grades of all examinations already completed. The grades of foreign educational certificates are to be converted into the German grading system. Based on the overall impression, the selection committee sets a grade between 1 and 5 for each of the two reviews in accordance with Section 4 (1), Clause 3, No. 6. The grades of the two reviews are added up and then divided by two. If the average grade of the two reviews is between 1.0 and 1.5, the procedural grade according to sentence 1 is increased by 0.2. If the average grade is worse than 1.5, but at least 2.5, the procedural grade is increased by 0.1. The selection committee grades the letter of motivation according to § 4 paragraph 1 sentence 3 no.8 based on the following criteria with a grade between 1 and 5:

    - Convincing presentation of one's own study interests in relation to the content of the Master’s degree in Environmental Governance at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität,
    - structured and clear expression,
    - correct external form and spelling.

    If the grade for the letter of motivation is between 1 and 1.5, the procedural grade improves by 0.3. If the grade is lower than 1.5, but at least 2.0, the procedural grade improves by 0.2. If the grade is worse than 2.0, but at least 2.5, the procedural grade improves by 0.1. If proof of completed vocational training within the meaning of Section 7 (2) No. 4 is provided, the procedural grade is increased by 0.3. If there is evidence of practical work within the meaning of Section 7 (2) No. 5 with a duration of at least six weeks, the procedural grade is increased by 0.1, with a duration of at least three months by 0.2 and with a duration of at least six months by 0.4. If proof of a stay abroad within the meaning of § 7 Paragraph 2 No. 6 with a duration of at least six months, the procedural grade is increased by 0.1 and with a duration of at least twelve months by 0.2. Each of the selection criteria according to § 7 Paragraph 2 Nos. 4 to 6 can only be counted once. If an applicant fulfills several of these selection criteria at the same time, an increase of a maximum of 0.5 takes place.

    (2) In accordance with the procedural grade determined in accordance with Paragraph 1, a ranking list of the participants in the selection procedure is created, with the stipulation that each of the cultural areas listed below may account for a maximum of 35 percent of the available study places and within a cultural area a maximum of 50 percent of the respective quota on a state:

    - Africa and Middle East
    - Asia
    - Europe
    - North America and Australia
    - South and Central America.

    Applicants are assigned to the cultural areas and the associated countries on the basis of their nationality.

    (3) In the event of an equal ranking, § 20 Paragraph 3 of the University Allocation Ordinance applies.
