Current challenges can often only be understood through history. In the “Historical Sciences” course, you will learn comprehensively how a comparative view of the past can be theoretically and methodologically well-founded.

You combine the subject-specific with an interdisciplinary approach: The course combines ancient, medieval, new and recent history with legal, art and church history as well as the highly topical area of "digital history". You have numerous options and can also learn foreign languages or acquire regional, social and economic knowledge.

The course in historical sciences opens up a wide range of professional opportunities in which historical knowledge and the critical handling of evidence from the past and historical source material are central prerequisites. You will learn to classify historical processes and abstract facts in complex contexts and thereby acquire fundamental problem-solving skills. As a historian, you traditionally have activities such as B. in archives and libraries, in adult education, in media of all kinds, in politics, in the tourism sector and in museums (especially with a cultural-historical orientation).

Even if studying abroad is not a compulsory part of this course, you can integrate a stay abroad into your studies.

The study regulations require a compulsory internship of at least two months, which you must complete within the framework of the internship guidelines. You may also be able to receive a scholarship for internships abroad.

The course consists of four module areas:

A: Basics
B: Priorities
C: extensions
D: Competencies

A: You have to complete six of the seven basic modules, the first three are mandatory: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Modern Times, Art History, Church History, Legal History and Digital Humanities.

B: You specialize in two larger and one or two other areas of focus from the areas of ancient history, the Middle Ages, modern times, the history of Eastern Europe, art history and visual studies, church history, legal history or digital history.

C: The extension module group serves to methodically establish, network, reflect and apply the knowledge from the subjects of module areas A and B. In addition to theoretical courses, you will also complete one or more excursions and an internship at home or abroad in this module area.

D: In this module area you have the opportunity to supplement your historical specialist knowledge with further knowledge and skills in one of four areas. The following areas are available:

    The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is the largest of the University's four faculties, and comprises the departments Education, Catholic Theology, Regional Cultural Studies, Governance and Historical Studies, and Language, Texts and Media, which together represent a total of 56 chairs and professorships.
