What do modern televisions and smartphones have in common?

Both systems are computers that are adapted to the needs of the users. In addition to the technical components, the software determines what you can do with the television or smartphone. Two areas of computer science play a major role here: software development and media informatics.

Software development is about the programs that allow you to solve problems with a computer. In addition to the small programs that we know as apps, software also includes the operating system, application software, such as B. the word processing and the e-mail program, and all applications that provide us with services on the Internet. For more complex programs, teams work to create the programs to divide up the work and bring specific knowledge to the program.

One of these special areas is media informatics. It deals with the processing of audio and video data with computers. An important point is, for example, the compression of the media data for transmission to the television or smartphone. Without compression, the existing networks would not be sufficient to transmit video data.

These two areas form the main focus of the Software Development and Media Informatics course. There are also basic subjects in computer science and projects from other fields of application, e.g. robots.

The practical semester (5 semesters) should give you an insight into everyday working life and also serve to establish contacts with companies. Here you can apply what you have learned in practice.

Stralsund University of Applied Sciences is a young university with a comparatively low average age of the teaching staff and very good technical equipment. In IT, the university can draw on more than 20 years of experience. Word has gotten around among companies that well-trained graduates come from Stralsund. Many students work for a company in the vicinity while they are still studying. Some of these companies have opened a branch in Stralsund in order to be in direct contact with students and graduates.

The scientific orientation is ensured, among other things, by the Institute for Applied Computer Science (IACS) with the doctoral students and professors working there.

Due to the broad basic training of the software development and media informatics (SMIB) course, our graduates have every opportunity to realize themselves in a wide variety of industries. Our modern degree program offers you plenty of variety with the two focus areas software development and media informatics.

It comprises six consecutive semesters and one practical semester. The course concludes with the academic degree Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). You can then start a master's degree immediately or following professional activity.

From the fourth semester you can choose one of the two majors: software development or media informatics.

In the first two semesters we lay the foundation for your further studies. In addition to technical basics and mathematics, you can expect the basics of programming and an introduction to computer science. In addition, there are important skills such as English and communication. In almost all subject areas, practical work in the laboratory is used as a supplement to the lecture in order to get to know the practical application of the content immediately. You will also get to know the current research projects in the department so that you can get an initial insight into the work of project teams.

Before the practical semester, which is usually completed outside the university, the computer science knowledge is deepened in the 3rd and 4th semester. In addition to other computer science basics, such as algorithms and data structures, databases I and network security, topics from software development (software engineering I, web engineering I) and media informatics (graphical data processing, media informatics I) are also covered.

The practical semester should give you an insight into everyday working life and also serve to establish contacts with companies. Here you can apply what you have learned in practice.

The events in the 6th and 7th semester serve to further deepen knowledge and focus (blue - software development, orange - media informatics). The events are becoming increasingly project-oriented in order to encourage you to learn and work independently.

For the focus on software development, for example, the organization of larger software projects should be mentioned. Software project organization is carried out in a team based on a current project that changes every semester. In the focus on media informatics, for example, it is the audio/video laboratory internship. A short film is shot on a current topic in order to play through the entire process of a media production.

All these events serve to prepare for the bachelor thesis, which takes up half of the 7th semester. Interesting topics from both companies and projects at the university are available for this purpose.
