Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Research and studies at KIT Department of Economics and Management at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology are characterized by interdisciplinary networking and a strong focus on current developments. Our department is the largest training center for students of Industrial Engineering and Management in Germany. It also offers a degree program in Economics Engineering (BSc and MSc), as well as one in Information Engineering and Management (BSc and MSc, jointly with the Department of Informatics) and one in Business Mathematics (MSc, jointly with the Department of Mathematics).

More details about Department of Economics and Management:

A Strategy

In connection with the establishment and expansion of the structures of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) created by the merger of the University of Karlsruhe and the research center of the Helmholtz Association, and in response to the dynamics of scientific development, the KIT Faculty of Economics has its profile - developed and sharpened. This is presented in more detail under B below.

The faculty pursues a strategy of focal points. This is intended to support the concentration of resources and resources and thus the development of synergies for the time required. The strategy provides for responding to current situations and challenges by creating additional focal points without hindering the development of new, new subject areas and focal points.

B Profile

With its long-standing methodological orientation and the corresponding technical equipment, the faculty has set itself the goal of making an important academic and practical contribution to the development, testing and application of theories, methods, instruments and aids for the design and optimization of products, services, processes, systems and structures. The activities and projects of researchers, lecturers and employees primarily take into account the dynamics of technical, economic and social development from the point of view of the optimization of effort and benefits (efficiency) and at the same time the principles of sustainability and respect for environmental responsibility and society respected.

As Figure 1 shows, methodological basics are developed in particular for the following subject areas:

  • Innovation
  • Global value networks
  • Modeling, simulation & econometrics
  • IT for efficient business engineering
  • Coordination and collaboration
  • Decide
  • Measure, evaluate and aggregate
  • Mechanism Design & Behavioral Economics

These areas also express the core competence of the faculty members in their institutes.

In addition to the further development and testing of methodological foundations, their problem-related application takes place in a variety of sectors, needs and subject areas:

  • IT & communication
  • Energy and production
  • Health care
  • Finance
  • Mobility and traffic
  • Government

With this, the faculty networks closely with the overarching KIT focal points "COMMputation", "People and Technology" and "Mobility", as well as with the KIT Center "Energy".

The faculty's institutes and staff are involved in a variety of ways in these KIT structures, they also cooperate with leading companies in business and administration and take on the tasks of advising on policies. In this way, they make a significant contribution to the success of the excellent research work at KIT.

The faculty sees itself as ideally equipped to face the decisive social challenges of the future in accordance with the three pillars of KIT "Teaching, Research and Innovation" by:

  • provides the students with the necessary knowledge and skills develops and develops valuable, creative solutions to problems for people and companies in business and society
  • helps them to successfully implement this in close cooperation with industry and politics.

C Center of gravity

Similar to an orchestra, the faculty, with its profile formation, has the personal and technical competence and capacity that are required for the implementation of both traditional and modern "pieces" with the highest quality standards. At the same time, new team members and instruments can be integrated at any time and contributions can be made to develop new pieces.

In view of the current global development of almost all nations towards service companies, the faculty will focus on the focus on services in the coming years. As a "modern piece" in the picture above, the team of the faculty works in particular on the subject area "IT-based services -" Services "- in networked economies". These economies, such as IT & communication, energy, health care, finance, mobility and traffic and government, are particularly driven by modern services that are available almost everywhere at relatively low cost, at high speeds, individually or complexly orchestrated. As a rule, customers are integrated into the value chain very early on (prosumer), which requires a new communication culture between service customers and suppliers. All these peculiarities of the economies in focus lead to tasks and goals in the "orchestral work" of the faculty, which are shown in the following illustration:

The topic of services has points of contact with the above-mentioned KIT focal points and KIT centers, is in high demand in politics and business, and the content can be shared and shaped by numerous employees and institutes. Within the framework of the faculty's profile - while maintaining other topics and structures - a content-related thematic concentration will take place on the following aspects:

  • Regulation & mechanism design
  • Quality measurement and evaluation
  • Prompt, decentralized decision-making
  • Collaborative value creation
  • Open innovation & design
  • Modeling & simulation
  • Service Value Networks
  • Pricing & incentive systems.

The faculty - embedded in the excellent environment of KIT - creates the best conditions for students, teachers and researchers to make valuable contributions to the crucial issues of societies in a globally networked world. The aim is to attract interesting partners from industry and science for successful cooperation and the best minds for study and research.
