Department of Informatics Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
Fakultät für Informatik (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie)
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
Computer science in Karlsruhe can already look back on a long and successful tradition. More than 40 years ago (1972) Germany's first faculty of computer science was founded here. A few years earlier, the first computer science study program at the former University of Karlsruhe (TH) started. Since then, the current KIT faculty has grown steadily. Thousands of students have completed computer science studies, more than one thousand young scientists have earned their doctorate here and a variety of computer science innovations have their origins in the research groups of the KIT Faculty of Computer Science. A development that also continued in 2015.
More details about Department of Informatics:
Computer science deals with the description, analysis, construction and operation of information processing systems. And these systems have now penetrated not only all industries in business and industry, but also all aspects of everyday life and almost all generations. This spirit of digital transformation is clearly noticeable at the KIT Faculty of Computer Science. In the institutes and research groups, computer scientists work daily on the challenges that the increasing digitization brings with it. The handling of ever larger amounts of data, the ever-increasing interconnectedness of all things, the increase in autonomous technical systems or the increasing involvement of computer science in critical systems are among the current problems that concern the students and the scientists of the KIT faculty. In research as well as in teaching, therefore, the technical and methodological challenges of the realization of visions as well as the questions of the responsible use of information technologies are in the center. For this reason, the KIT Faculty of Computer Science has the four major topics of Data Science and Engineering, Internet of Everything, Robotics & amp; Cognitive Systems and Secure and Dependable Systems are named as priorities of further development. These topics are supported by the competencies in all computer science subjects represented at the KIT Faculty of Computer Science. These four main topics directly support the umbrella strategy of KIT. Thus, the KIT Faculty of Computer Science can contribute its expertise in the fields of mobility, energy and information mentioned therein. This strengthens the networking of competencies not only within the KIT faculty, but also interdisciplinary within the KIT
