More details about Faculty 02: Social Sciences, Media, and Sports:

The department consists of six institutes or specialist disciplines: educational science, political science, journalism, psychology, sociology and sports science. These institutes offer a total of 8 undergraduate bachelor's and 17 postgraduate master's programs. Every year, more than 600 new students choose one of these diverse courses in the department. All courses are currently restricted in admission because they are all in high demand on the applicant market and are therefore fully utilized. The JGU has recently expanded the department's resources in order to absorb the increasing demand.

69 professors (including 15 junior professors) as well as over 300 scientific and non-scientific staff are employed in Department 02 and lead more than 600 students annually to a professional qualification. Around 50 doctoral and postdoctoral theses are published by the department's young scientists every year.

Research and teaching

The department's scientists attract several million third-party funds each year and are involved in a number of excellent research institutions and associations: the Research Training Group "Transnational Social Support", the "Center for Education, School and University Research", the DFG research group "Un / doing Differences - Practices of Human Differentiation ”and the“ German Resilience Center ”are just a few of the department's many research flagships.

In addition to the high-quality and diverse research, the department guarantees a wide range of courses, from the "Trinational Master European Studies" in political science to "Audiovisual Publishing" or "Media Management" in journalism to "Psychological Psychotherapy" or the "Executive Master in European" Sport Governance ”in sports science is enough. The optimal link between research and teaching in the Humboldtian sense, ie “research-based learning”, is the focus of all of the department's programs.
