Faculty 03 – ME – Mechanical and Energy Engineering (Gi) TH Mittelhessen University of Applied Sciences

FB 03 - ME - Maschinenbau und Energietechnik (Gi) (Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (Gießen, Friedberg, Wetzlar))

TH Mittelhessen University of Applied Sciences

The Faculty of Mechanical and Energy Engineering is one of the largest departments of THM. Mechanical engineering and energy technology are among the most important engineering disciplines. Engineers in these disciplines contribute significantly to the security and sustainable development of the industrial location and have excellent career prospects.

More details about Faculty 03 – ME – Mechanical and Energy Engineering (Gi):

The Faculty of Mechanical and Energy Engineering is currently one of the largest faculties of the Technical University of Central Hesse with currently 28 professors, 47 employees and approximately 1,600 students. A variety of research and development projects are carried out in the institutes of the department and its affiliated laboratories.

Mechanical and plant engineering is the largest industrial sector in the Federal Republic of Germany. The application and (further) development of materials, products and manufacturing processes at the highest level is indispensable for this. The (further) development of efficient processes of energy and material transformation is the basis for the sustainable supply of plants and households with the required final energy (heat, fuel, electricity). Mechanical engineering and energy technology are therefore among the most important engineering disciplines. Well-trained engineers from these disciplines contribute significantly to the security and sustainable development of the industrial site.

Mechanical Engineering & Energy Technology

Due to the scientific-historical development in the field of engineering, the terms "cold" and "warm" mechanical engineering are often used instead of mechanical engineering and energy technology. The "cold mechanical engineering" deals with the neuter products of mechanical and plant engineering, the methods of their strength-oriented construction, their materials and their manufacturing process. Here are the component or the module or system itself in the foreground. The "warm mechanical engineering" deals with the energetic and material processes that take place in apparatuses and / or machines, their analysis and synthesis. Therefore, the "warm mechanical engineering" has large intersections to the process engineering.

These two areas of mechanical engineering and energy technology are thematically linked. For example, in the (further) development of the components and control of an internal combustion engine, as well as in the development of the components, the system design and the optimal operating regime thermal power plant or a wind turbine tasks from the field of "warm engineering", ie the processes the energy conversion. At the same time, the design, the selection of suitable materials and manufacturing processes for the components of the system engineering itself is also the result of a product development process that is part of "cold mechanical engineering". At the location Gießen of the Technical University of Central Hessen both areas are combined in the Faculty 03 Mechanical Engineering and Energy Technology (ME).
