Faculty 07 is divided into four Institutes / Seminars: The institute for Classical Studies, the Historical Seminar, the Institute for Art History and Musicology and the Institute for Ethnology and African Studies. Nationwide, it is one of the outstanding addresses for high-level research and for practice-oriented teaching, which is carried out in close cooperation with the major archives and museums in Mainz.

Studying history and cultural studies in Mainz means, above all, being able to benefit from a wide range of top-class study opportunities. The variety of subjects represented in the department corresponds to the diversity of human cultures - from the Stone Age to the present day, from Europe to the Mediterranean and the Middle East to Africa with all its manifestations from literature and material legacies to art and music to everyday culture. Archaeological, philological, historical, art historical, musicological and ethnological approaches come into play.

It is currently possible to obtain the academic degrees of Magistra / Magister Artium (MA), Bachelor of Arts / Education (BA / BEd), Master of Arts / Education (MA / MEd) and of the doctor philosophiae (Dr. phil.). Between the first semester and the academic graduation ceremony, 31 full-time professors and over 100 employees supervise the students in teaching. New media, subject-specific archives and libraries, original and cast collections as well as a centrally located departmental library offer students access to research, which is a central, connecting feature of the subjects of the department. The advantages of the location lie in addition to the wide range of subjects at the JGU and the associated interdisciplinary exchange in close cooperation with internationally renowned institutions such as the Roman-Germanic Central Museum (RGZM), the Academy of Sciences and Literature (AdW) and the Institute for Historical regional studies (IGL) or university medicine, which have formed a scientific alliance in Mainz.
