At the Faculty of Social Sciences, more than 5,000 students study various courses in geography, history, political science and sociology. In addition to the bachelor’s degree programs in the four subjects introduced between 2003 and 2005, a bachelor’s degree in Integrated European Studies and Master’s degrees in history, social policy, political science, urban and regional development and in sociology and social research are offered. An international or cooperative master’s program deals with international relations and global governance, and another cooperative master’s program deals with complex decision-making.

The social sciences department emerged together with the "Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences" (BIGSSS), the "Institute for International Relations" (InIIS), the "Sustainability Research Center" (artec), and the "SOCIUM Research Center for Inequality and Social Policy" from the "Center for Social Policy" (ZeS) and the "Institute for Empirical and Applied Sociology" (EMPAS), as well as the non-university research facility "Research Center for Eastern Europe" (FSO) contributed to the success of the University of Bremen for the title of "University of Excellence". The combination of excellent research with innovative teaching in our department is confirmed by our researchers who deal with relevant issues from the environment, society and politics.
Good research and good teaching go hand in hand. Research-based learning as a trademark of the University of Bremen is very important to our department and relates to current reality. Our lecturers participate in international and interdisciplinary collaborative research and bring specialist knowledge as well as intercultural competence to teaching.
We value an open and communicative discourse in research, the promotion of young talent and in studies, and we understand education as the active development of intellectual and social skills. The varied and successful career paths of our graduates confirm this path taken by Faculty 08 at the University of Bremen.
