More details about Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science:

What all subjects at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science have in common is to describe, develop and understand the foundations of culture in its social change and against the background of its historical development in order to gain knowledge for practice. This affects society in general, religion, politics, art and culture, the media and private lifestyles. For research into social and political orders, urban, regional and global developments as well as cultural institutions such as museums and libraries, the Philosophical Faculty offers explanatory knowledge and interpretations for human thinking and behavior at the individual and societal level. This profile was the focal point for the research profile line culture and social change - one of five strategic profile lines of the TU Dresden.

The subjects at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science are divided into eight, since 2020 into nine institutes, each of Philosophy, Catholic Theology, Protestant Theology, History, Art and Musicology, Political Science, Sociology, Communication Studies and Law are dedicated.

With around 2000 students, the Philosophical Faculty is the largest faculty in the “Humanities and Social Sciences” department. In this area it is united with its neighboring faculties “Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies”, “Educational Sciences” and the “Law Faculty” in order to work together in the fields of research, teaching and administration. The formation of the areas was an important measure with which the TU Dresden was successful on the way to becoming a University of Excellence.

The Philosophical Faculty offers over 20 courses and subjects. A core and at least one additional area complement each other in the specialist bachelor's degree programs. The master’s degree programs convey in-depth and specialized specialist skills, which in turn are supplemented by components from other disciplines, including from other faculties.

In addition to the BA and MA courses, the faculty offers specialist training for teacher training courses in the subjects of history, Protestant and Catholic religious studies, philosophy, and social studies and art. In these teacher training courses, too, the subjects of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science can be combined with those of other faculties.
