The globalisation we have experienced in recent years would have been unimaginable without tremendous advances in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) going along with the world-wide deregulation of markets. Thus, technology transfer is accelerated, the boundaries of national economies dissolve and the competitive pressure for enterprises increases. Almost globally interconnected markets for goods, capital, labour and information emerge, creating new challenges but also potential threats for companies and citizens.

The Faculty of Business Administration and Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen analyses topical issues from the perspectives of economics, business administration, information systems and computer science. The focus is on structures and processes as well as on information and communication systems of enterprises. Of particular interest are the sectors energy, health, retail and services, logistics, automotive industry, IT companies, as well as auditing, tax advisory and consulting.

Efficient organisation of economic structures and processes is impossible without systematic processing of information, just as IT systems cannot be developed and operated without reference to economic principles and conditions. "Networking across disciplines" describes the successful, practice-oriented model developed by the Faculty. The integration of Business Studies, Computer Science, Business Information Systems and Economics is a unique competitive advantage for the university and helps to produce highly skilled graduates. Research and teaching in the Faculty are interdisciplinary, which amongst other things enables students to switch smoothly between a range of course options. In addition to programmes in Computer Science, Business Studies, Health Care Management, Economic Studies and Business Information Systems, the Faculty also offers Computer Science and Business Administration components for teacher training students. Continuing education courses for professionals are also available, including the virtual programme in Business Information Systems (VAWi).
