The Faculty of Cultural Studies comprises the subjects that study ancient and modern cultures from a wide range of archeology, Oriental studies and Asian studies to ethnological disciplines. The variety of subjects corresponds to the diversity of human cultures - from the Stone Age to the present, from Europe to the Mediterranean and the Middle East to East Asia - and all their manifestations from literature to art to everyday culture. Here are philological-historical, archaeological-art-historical and cultural-anthropological approaches to bear.

The faculty's designation as "cultural sciences" reflects the number of cultures treated here, as well as the belief that scriptures, languages ​​and literatures, religion or everyday customs should all be viewed in a common frame of reference for culture.

The close connection to research is a central, connecting feature of the faculty's subjects. The variety of subjects and equipment makes it possible to compare the Munich Faculty of Cultural Studies with corresponding departments of other major German universities. For us, the advantages of the Munich location lie in the largely outstanding library situation, including the Staatsbibliothek, the scientifically stimulating diversity of LMU subjects and the interdisciplinary exchange, as well as the close cooperation with relevant museums and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
