Founded in 1994 and renamed in 2017, today the faculty is home to various natural science disciplines. Hence, students and scientists benefit in many ways from the cooperation among the different fields and with other accredited institutions.

The faculty is structured academically into three institutes covering the academic fields of Biochemistry, Biology and Psychology. The constituent institutes offer a total of 9 degree programmes leading to the Bachelor or Masters degree as well as the Staatsexamen. The faculty currently employs 29 professors. It has approximately 1700 registered students, as well as about 500 students pursuing a doctorate. The faculty and its institutes offer a unique combination of excellent and interdisciplinary research opportunities and a practical approach to teaching.
We proudly announce the foundation of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) which aims to become a world-class research centre in this emerging field. iDiv will address the four main questions of biodiversity sciences: (i) how can we detect and quantify biodiversity? (ii) how does biodiversity emerge? (iii) what are the consequences of biodiversity for the functioning of ecosystems? (iv) how can we safeguard biodiversity?
