Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences University of Bonn

Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät (Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn)

University of Bonn

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences was founded in 1936. Previously, her subjects belonged to the Faculty of Arts. Today, it is divided into eight specialist groups: Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics / Astronomy, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Biology, Pharmacy and Molecular Biomedicine. The range of subjects promotes interdisciplinary research and teaching.

In the Excellence Initiative of the Federal Government and the Länder, the Faculty has been successful on several occasions: with the only excellence cluster in mathematics, the Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy and the Cluster ImmunoSensation, which it runs together with the medical faculty. Other graduate schools are the research schools Biotech-Pharma and LIMES Chemical Biology as well as the Bonn-Aachen International Research School at Applied Informatics (B-IT Research School). In addition, the faculty is characterized by four local and six transregional Collaborative Research Centers, which are located in the fields of mathematics, life sciences, physics, chemistry and meteorology. These large research networks enjoy the highest reputation among the funding programs of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

More details about Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences:

Research

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a high international visibility in research. Many of the faculty's research areas are organized in interdisciplinary centers. Important examples are the Bethe Center for Theoretical Physics, LIMES (Life & Medical Sciences), CEMBIO (Center for Molecular Biotechnology), IZKS (Interdisciplinary Center for Complex Systems), ZFL (Center for Remote Sensing of the Land Surface, a Cross-faculty Geocompound) and the Pharmaceutical Center Bonn. In addition, the faculty cooperates extensively with the University of Cologne in the field of physics, in computer science with the RWTH Aachen and in the Geoverbund ABC / J with the universities of Cologne, RWTH Aachen and the Forschungszentrum Jülich. The faculty has many collaborations with non-university institutions, including the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics and Radio Astronomy, the Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing, the caesar research center and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases DZNE.

Courses

The study program covers the entire spectrum of scientific disciplines. The faculty offers over 40 degrees. In all subjects, there are undergraduate six-semester courses, which conclude with the Bachelor of Science. In order to deepen their knowledge of the ability to acquire independent scientific research, the subjects offer four-semester master's programs. Several degree programs are interdisciplinary and networked with other faculties or other universities. Particularly noteworthy are the degree program Molecular Biomedicine, which is carried out jointly by the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Medicine, as well as the Master's program Neurosciences (also in cooperation with the Medical Faculty). The Master of Science in Molecular Biotechnology involves the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Medical and Agricultural. The Master Program Physics of the Earth and Atmosphere (in the subjects geophysics and meteorology) is offered in cooperation with the University of Cologne. The faculty collaborates with the United Nations University, which has its headquarters in the federal city of Bonn, with the "Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security" master's degree program.

A structured doctoral program is offered by the Faculty through the Bonn International Graduate Schools (BIGS), which are established in the subjects of Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry, Life & Medical Sciences, Drug Sciences, and the Neurosciences
