The focus of our research

The Faculty strives for excellence in all areas of biomedical research. In the past years, strategic appointments and major research projects have allowed us to establish particular expertise in five core areas:

Researchers and clinicians who specialize in infection research and immunology investigate questions in infection biology and immune defense, mechanisms of inflammation, auto-immunity, and transplant immunology.

Our renal and vascular experts work towards more effective prevention and regeneration to address the high socio-economic cost of chronic kidney and vascular diseases.

Experimental and clinical neuroscience research in Erlangen covers areas ranging from signal transduction, neurotransmission, and information processing to the perception of pain and glaucoma research.

Breast cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, lung cancer, melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, and colorectal carcinoma are the primary areas of interest of our cancer researchers.

Researchers and engineers at the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Engineering and the surrounding industries have turned the region into a key location for medical technologies (especially imaging, bioinformatics, and intelligent sensors).
