The departments and Institutes of the Faculty of Philosophy represent a broad spectrum of disciplines studying human cultural development, from the earliest traces of human civilization to the present day. Thematically, the focus is on philosophy, history, the cultures and languages of Europe, the Middle East, South and East Asia and North America.

The Faculty of Philosophy is characterized by a strong research orientation. It gains its specific profile from the dynamic tension between disciplinary diversity and transdisciplinary collaborative research. Through joint projects such as the SFB 933 "Material Text Cultures" and through new institutional structures, such as the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS), the Heidelberg Center for Cultural Heritage (HCCH), the Center for Asian and Transcultural Studies (CATS) and the Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE), a tight research network has been created across the university, especially with the Faculty of Modern Languages, the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Behavioral and Cultural Sciences, the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences, as well as with local partners such as the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien, Heidelberg (HfJS) and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (HAW).

A research-oriented disciplinary education focused on core skills and methods in the first years of study is the essential character of the programs of study at the Faculty. At the graduate level, interdisciplinary and innovative study programs are offered in addition to the continuation of the BA fields in a Master's program – some of which are taught in cooperation with international partners – and in doctoral studies.
