Friedrich Schiller University Jena

The Faculty of Philosophy (Faculty of Arts) is the founding faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. It developed from the "Collegium Jenense", which was founded in the mid-16th century in a former Dominican monastery. The rhetorician Johannes Stigel and the theologian Victorin Strigel formed the Collegium to an educational institution oriented towards humanistic reform concepts. They taught teachers, lawyers and theologians in the Lutheran sense.

Under the name "Alma Mater Jenensis" the Jena University began its regular teaching in 1558. In the 18th century, the secret councilor Johann Wolfgang Goethe committed thoughtfully important thinkers and researchers and created ideal conditions for the joint work of the humanities and natural sciences. Later, famous philosophers such as Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel coined the humanities in Jena.

Today, the Faculty of Arts in addition to the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences is the largest faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. In the summer semester of 2013, its 17 institutes and institutions offered more than 4,000 students a place to study.

Students can choose between 15 Bachelor's, 11 Master's and 25 Master's degree programs, which are supervised by around 70 professors and 180 academic staff members. In addition, more than 180 young academics are working on their doctorate. The scientists are supported in research and teaching by around 80 employees in secretariats and administration.

The Faculty of Arts sees itself as a classical faculty with a focus on language and literature, art and philosophy, history and communication. It therefore not only has newer philologies such as English, American, German, Slavic and Romance studies, but also devoted to ancient philologies such as Indo-European studies and the languages of the ancient Near East.

In addition, the faculty is committed to the concern of familiarizing its students with aesthetic and historical perspectives. It therefore has a broad spectrum of philosophical disciplines and rounds off its art-historical competences through the scientific examination of new media and technologies. And last but not least, the faculty sees an important task in promoting historical understanding. It sets epochal and regional priorities.
