Faculty of Physics Technische Universität Dresden

Fakultät Physik (Technische Universität Dresden)

Technische Universität Dresden

Dresden Physics ...
... is one of the ten most research-intensive physics departments in Germany according to the CHE research ranking. Experimental and theoretical research focuses on solid state physics, nuclear and particle physics, complex quantum systems and biophysics. In the training of doctoral students, Dresden Physics occupies a leading position with over 70 doctorates annually.

In teaching, the faculty provides a broad physical education at the highest level with a strong research focus, quick degrees and international orientation, as the place in the top group of the CHE rankings shows. A total of around 950 students are enrolled in the Bachelor and Master degrees in Physics, Master in Organic and Molecular Electronics and in Physics as a teacher.

More details about Faculty of Physics:

Physics students can specialise in one of the focus areas offered in accordance with their interests, whether these include quantum field theory in theoretical physics, researching surfaces with modern tools in solid state physics, or researching organic LEDs at the Institute for Applied Physics. In addition, part-time, physics-related jobs for students can always be found at the university, one of the three Max Planck institutes, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Rossendorf, or at one of the many Leibniz and Fraunhofer institutes.

Equally important for successful study in physics are the instructional facilities. Dresden excels in this area as well: overcrowded lecture halls are a foreign concept, and small tutorial groups ensure very good support for students. Practice rooms, classrooms, and computer labs are available to students. During the semester, scientific excursions take place to locations such as BESSY II in Berlin, or CERN. These are offered by professors, or are organised by the Fachschaftsrat (student council). A mentoring system with physics professors and a diversified introductory programme for first-semester students through the Fachschaftsrat, in cooperation with the institutes, eases the transition into study in physics and student life.

Dresden offers its students excellent conditions for studying: residence halls run by the Studentenwerk are available close to campus, the TUDIAS language learning centre offers 20 different languages at all levels, and through the university's Sports Centre, one can choose from among more than 130 sports. The campus, where the physics building, lecture halls, and many research institutions are located, is in the southern part of Dresden and is easily reachable by bus, tram, or bicycle.  The Saxon State and University Library (SLUB) is one of the largest libraries in Germany and offers ideal conditions for quiet studying. The physical well-being of the students is also looked after: the Studentenwerk cafeterias offer a variety of inexpensive meals.

Saxony does not charge its students tuition. The semester fees for the TU Dresden include a ticket for city public transportation and a ticket for the Deutsche Bahn that is valid Saxony-wide. Thus, there are many options for excursions in the area around Dresden: history in visits to one of the castles in the Schlösserland Sachsen (Land of Castles), nature in one of the large forest areas around Dresden, or impressive rock formations in the Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland). If, after a while in Dresden, you still find yourself drawn to see the world at large, you will be supported by exchange programmes, such as ERASMUS, and you can choose, for example, from among partner universities in Spain, Sweden, Poland, Canada, Japan, etc.
