Faculty of Physics Bielefeld University

Fakultät für Physik (Universität Bielefeld)

Bielefeld University

Physics for the 21st century - Universities invent new knowledge and thus shape the future. This applies in particular to the Faculty of Physics at Bielefeld University. As a physics student, you can become a part of this creative process. After an introduction to the basics of physics, you will get to know many exciting current topics that are being worked on in Bielefeld. You will have the opportunity to research a topic of your choice during your bachelor thesis, master thesis or doctorate.

In Bielefeld, we work in the various working groups on a wide range of physical issues. Quantum field theory and quantum chromodynamics are used to investigate how the structure of elementary particles can be understood, how they react with one another and what role they played, for example, in the early universe. This corresponds to research on the cosmology of the early universe, especially on the phase of inflation, in which the universe has inflated enormously. Symmetries, their violations and the asymmetry between matter and antimatter, dark matter and energy occupy us intensively. In solid state physics, quantum phenomena play a dominant role in new materials. We study topological insulators, in which electrons move according to their magnetic moment, and spintronic systems, in which magnetic quasiparticles form spin currents. Spatially and temporally super high-resolution optical methods for medical applications and for material analysis, questions of molecular biophysics and the production, characterization and application of two-dimensional materials and nanometer-thin membranes as well as radio astronomy complete the research spectrum of physics in Bielefeld. Studies at our faculty are characterized by a very good student-teacher ratio. 18 professors and their staff take care of you in lectures, exercises, internships and seminars and especially in the working groups. Exercise groups and seminars usually have no more than 20 participants. Our doors are open to you with all problems. At the latest for the bachelor thesis you will be involved in working groups. Our research often takes place in international contexts, which will allow you to go abroad, even before completing your doctorate.

What are the prerequisites for studying physics? Curiosity and an interest in natural sciences, mathematics and technology are the ideal starting conditions for studying physics; above-average knowledge of physics is not required. You get it from us! Since physics is a cross-cultural, international science, good knowledge of English is important for successful studies and later professional life.

Help shape the future in the 21st century - a degree in physics lays the foundation for this, and later career prospects are excellent.
