Faculty of Sciences Friedrich–Alexander University Erlangen–Nürnberg

Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg)

Friedrich–Alexander University Erlangen–Nürnberg

The Faculty carries out both fundamental and applied research. This research is highly interdisciplinary, involving not only researchers from the Faculty’s departments but also experts from the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering, as well as other national and international institutions. The Faculty is involved in 7 of the University’s 8 Major Research Areas and has also established its own Research Focus Areas which cover a wide range of topics, from communication and signalling to molecular materials and geodynamics, geomaterials and georesources, representation theory, astroparticle physics and optics.

Its students receive an outstanding education in a variety of degree programmes which cover all of the key scientific disciplines, with 11 Bachelor’s and 14 Master’s degree programmes and teaching degrees (Lehramt) for the subjects biology, chemistry, geography, mathematics and physics. The Faculty ensures a close interlinking of research and teaching, allowing new knowledge to be passed directly on to its students. At the same time, students are given intensive support with their final theses which are highly research-based and contribute to the research progress. The Faculty of Sciences also runs the Bavarian elite degree programmes Physics Advanced and Integrated Immunology.

More details about Faculty of Sciences:

The Faculty of Natural Sciences of FAU is one of the best science faculties in Germany. Their subjects - the faculty is divided into the Departments of Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy as well as Geography and Geology - regularly occupy the leading positions in various rankings, and their scientists have won numerous highly prized awards and prizes.

The faculty's research spectrum covers both basic and applied research. Interdisciplinarity plays a major role here: the departments are not only networked with each other, they also conduct research together with the medical and technical faculty as well as with national and international institutions. The faculty participates in six of FAU's eight major research areas and has established its own research areas, ranging from communication and signal transmission via molecular materials and geodynamics, geomaterials and geo-resources to representation theory, astroparticle physics or optics.

With its study program, the faculty covers all areas of the natural sciences: In each of twelve bachelor's and master's programs as well as teacher training courses in biology, chemistry, geography, mathematics and physics, the students receive a high-quality education. As the faculty closely interlinks research and teaching, new research results can be incorporated directly into teaching. On the other hand, research-related, intensively supervised theses directly contribute to the further development of research. With "Physics Advanced", the faculty of natural sciences also offers a Bavarian elite degree program. Highly talented 11th to 13th grade students have nine early-stage programs.
