Anyone who thinks of Salzgitter initially suspects a lot of industry. Salzgitter is the third largest industrial location in Lower Saxony, with the largest inland port in Northern Germany and the world's largest IKEA distribution center. Companies such as MAN or Salzgitter AG, Volkswagen and numerous medium-sized companies have their headquarters in Salzgitter.

But the city, with over 100,000 inhabitants, also has other sides. Historical buildings and art in public space, city festivals, friendly residential areas in the countryside and, last but not least, the Salzgittersee water sports center. With its 1.5 kilometer long beach and its excellent water quality, it is a fantastic area for "water rats", surf fans, water skiers or just sun-seekers. Not far from its bank is the ice rink with a wide range of ice hockey and curling to ice skating for everyone.

The mixed forests of the Salzgitter mountain range invite you to go hiking or mountain biking. In the health resort of Salzgitter-Bad, one of the strongest natural thermal brine springs in Germany bubbles, which can be enjoyed in the thermal brine wave pool.

Anyone expecting a campus in the middle of an industrial area is very wrong. The Faculty of Transport, Sports, Tourism and Media resides in an idyllic location in a former administration building of Salzgitter Erzbergbau AG in the Calbecht district.

The university buildings are "a monument to regional industrial culture" and were rebuilt and restored at great expense in the early 1990s. A spacious campus area with state-of-the-art equipment was created in the midst of a scenic environment. The Salzgitter university campus is nevertheless close to the Braunschweig / Hanover metropolitan area.
