With almost 5,000 students, the Faculty of Law is one of the largest legal departments in Germany. Every year around 600 students complete their studies with the first state examination in law, with an above-average number of them with good and very good results - just like their faculty, which regularly comes out on top in rankings.

Many first-year students consult one of the university rankings published in Germany when choosing their university. Looking at the rankings of recent years, the Law Faculty of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU) can be proud of: It regularly takes a top position among the 44 faculties in Germany.

“The department is the basic organizational unit of the university” (Section 64 Paragraph 1 Sentence 1 HRG). Accordingly, the Law Faculty, which in Münster still bears the traditional name “Faculty of Law”, has the right and the duty to fulfill the tasks of the university in the field of law according to its own judgment.

According to the departmental regulations, the departmental council and dean's office are the organs of the faculty. The faculty council is responsible for all matters relating to research and teaching in the faculty, unless these are assigned to the dean's office by law.

The faculty is divided into eleven institutes, two chairs, five further professorships and operational units such as the examination office or the IV care unit.
