With around 5200 students (as of 10/2018), the Law Faculty of the LMU is one of the most renowned and largest faculties in Germany. It has the lowest dropout rate and a top position in the exam results throughout Bavaria. These services do not include inter-faculty training, which looks after around 2000 students.

In terms of research, the Faculty of Law is committed to its nationally and internationally well-documented top position. Both areas are inextricably linked: excellent university teaching can only exist in connection with excellent research. The overall performance of the LMU Faculty of Law does justice to this, even after an external evaluation with the highest rating.

Studying law is a professional requirement in the most demanding state and private employment relationships in the national and international sector. The law faculty is bound by mandatory legal requirements with regard to its courses. The training at the Law Faculty of the LMU must take this into account with all subject-specific national and international references on the basis of Art. 12 and 5 Para. 3 GG, Art. 108 BV. The German Judiciary Act contains mandatory basic legal requirements for this training, which in no way restricts the requirements for studying law to the professional profile of judges or administrative lawyers. Rather, Section 5 a of the German Judges Act prescribes a very broad education for the faculties as the basis for a wide range of legal professions. According to this, the contents of the course are legally prescribed and mandatory subjects and areas of specialization with options. In addition, the successful attendance of a foreign-language legal event or a legal language course must be proven. Compulsory subjects are the core areas of civil law, criminal law, public law and procedural law, including references to European law, legal methods and the philosophical, historical and social fundamentals. The focus areas serve to complement the course, to deepen the related compulsory subjects and to convey interdisciplinary and international references to law. The content of the course must also take legal, administrative and legal practice into account and convey the key skills required for this, such as negotiation management, conversation skills, rhetoric, dispute resolution, mediation, interrogation and communication skills.

In addition, the professors are involved in the implementation of the first legal examination, in the context of subject-specific foreign language training, the postgraduate courses "Fundamentals of German Law", "European and International Business Law", "Legal Informatics and Information Law", the training of economists and within the framework of the training "Law as a minor subject" with.

The research results obtained and published at the Faculty of Law have first place. Proof of this is, in addition to extensive publication activity, a large number of post-doctoral qualifications and doctorates, the rapid appointment of post-doctoral candidates to professorships, the awarding of faculty members with more than forty honorary doctorates from German and foreign universities, the awarding of faculty members with the Leibniz Prize, the membership of faculty members in science academies, numerous Humboldt scholarship holders and award winners, the participation of faculty members on all comments relevant to the legal development in Germany, the appointment of two faculty members to the Federal Constitutional Court, one of whom is the president of the court and the appointment of one Faculty member to judge of the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
