Law Faculty University of Potsdam
Juristische Fakultät (Universität Potsdam)
The Faculty of Law at the University of Potsdam, with over 2,000 students and around 250 graduates every year, is the “largest” of the law faculties in the state of Brandenburg. Here, lawyers are trained for the judiciary, the ministerial service and the state and local administrations, for law firms and notaries, for associations and companies. The high level of expertise in the areas of international law and human rights, international private and civil procedural law as well as media business law also makes the University of Potsdam ideal for training lawyers for European institutions and international organizations in the public and private sectors.
More details about Law Faculty:
The “core business” of the faculty is the qualification of students and the preparation for the first law examination. Based on the guiding principle of research-based teaching, the latest research results are incorporated directly into the conception of the courses. A visible expression of this principle is the large number of textbooks distributed nationwide by top publishers that come from the Faculty of Law at the University of Potsdam. The students therefore enjoy the advantage of being able to immediately read what they heard in the lecture in black and white.
The quality of Potsdam graduates is high. They achieve the best grades on average in the country and study for the standard period of study more often than average. A result of the good personal support in a relatively manageable faculty with short distances and the close contact between teachers and students.
The focus areas that the Faculty of Law in Potsdam has developed are business law, European and international. On the other hand, the basics of legal science are not neglected. This format focuses on the practical relevance of the training content without losing scientific depth. Business law can only be studied in this combination of subjects in Potsdam.
While the classic legal training to become a fully qualified lawyer is aimed at acquiring the "qualification for judicial office", since the winter semester 2013/2014 the Faculty of Law has also been offering around 1,200 students the opportunity to complete the standard period of study with the degree of "Bachelor of Law" from the 6th semester onwards Laws" (LL.B.) to acquire a first professional qualification. All students who want to get involved in practice and specialize early on have an almost unique opportunity in Germany to tailor their degrees to suit their professional goals. Supplemented by the possibility of further qualification in the classic state examination course, a master's degree (LL.M.) or master's degree (Magister Legum) at home or abroad, students acquire modern degrees that meet the expectations of practice. The courses offered for other faculties are also tailored precisely to their needs. The second-subject bachelor's degree programs "Business Law" and "Public Law" are aimed primarily at students in the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. Students from other faculties can also take advantage of an attractive range of courses for non-lawyers. In the increasingly important field of further education, Potsdam's Law Faculty is innovative and modern. The offerings tie seamlessly to the business law orientation of the focus areas. The family-friendly and part-time master's program in corporate and tax law with over one hundred students is unique in the region. The mediation certificate course continues to be very popular, and not just among lawyers. There is also a local science offering that takes into account the growing need for qualifications in city and municipal administrations.
