School of Civil Engineering (B) Hamburg University of Technology

Studiendekanat Bauwesen (Technische Universität Hamburg)

Hamburg University of Technology

The School of Civil Engineering of the Hamburg University of Technology both deals with traditional civil engineering tasks and faces up to the global and local challenges of shaping our environment and society. As a modern university institution the school sees its current tasks and problems to be solved as lying especially in environmental and climate protection, and provides answers to the latest questions in research and teaching.

More details about School of Civil Engineering (B):

Traditionally, civil engineers plan and construct a wide variety of buildings such as apartment or office blocks, factories, research centers schools and universities, but also roads, bridges, railway tracks, stations, tunnels, airports and ports. They assume responsibility for the entire life cycle of the buildings and facilities produced.

Increasingly, however, civil engineers deal creatively with the environmental problems of our age, such as modernizing the energy systems of residential and office buildings; the extraction, processing and distribution of drinking water; sewage discharge and purification; the protection of rivers and seas; safe treatment of waste and historic pollution and their recycling or disposal; protection from the forces of nature by means of dykes and dams or extension of near-natural stretches of water; dealing creatively with the consequences of demographic change in our society, e.g. by urban renewal and urban shrinkage; and adaptation to climate change.

The Bachelor course lays the foundations for a subsequent career in these occupational fields. The course objective is not only to lay the theoretical foundation for a later academic career but also, and above all, to enable students to acquire practical knowledge and problem-solving skills.

As a rule, students go on to take a Master’s degree. The Master’s programs build directly on the Bachelor degree. The two are optimally synchronized and correspond to the qualifications for a Dipl.-Ing.

The TUHH has a long and honorable tradition of linking civil engineering with environmental engineering, as reflected in the offer of two specialized Master programs. The various consolidation subjects and majors correspond to the main focuses of research at the School of Civil Engineering institutes and enable in-depth academic study in both fields.

Students on the Civil Engineering Master program choose three out of five consolidation subjects, Solid Structures, Structural Analysis and Steel Structures, Building Materials and Building Maintenance, Hydraulic Engineering and Coastal Engineering, and Geotechnics. These they combine with one of three majors, Structural Engineering, Underground Construction, and Harbor Construction and Coastal Defense.

Students on the Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering Master program choose, analogously to those on the Civil Engineering course, three consolidation subjects out of Sewage and Waters Protection, Waste Resources and Energy, Water Resources and Supply, Environment, City and Traffic, and Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management. They combine these with one of three majors, Water Management in Populated Areas, Urban Environmental Management, and Environmental and Waters Management.

The subjects for in-depth study and majors in these two Master’s programs offer students the opportunity to choose according to their personal aptitude and interest while simultaneously orienting themselves purposefully to the needs of the world of building.

In addition, the General Engineering course provides a very broad engineering training and can be studied with Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering as a subject for in-depth study.
