Latin or English in the focus course G?

If you apply for a humanities subject for which your university requires or recommends knowledge of Latin, you automatically take part in Latin classes. There is then also the option of acquiring the Latinum. Students with other humanities subjects receive lessons in English after a placement test. In the G-course, English lessons are completed at level B2 and therefore prior knowledge of level B1 + is a prerequisite for the students. In the first week of classes, a placement test is carried out to check the level of English, which must be taken by all students for whom the university requires or recommends English for their desired course of study. Students who do not yet have the required level are strongly advised to take appropriate preparatory courses before applying.

Before you apply for a subject, you should find out exactly whether it actually corresponds to your ideas and goals. Because a change of subject could mean that you later have to learn either Latin or English in your subject.

Information about the German entrance test

The German entrance test usually consists of three parts:

• The first part of the test consists of a C test (short texts with gaps).
• The second part of the test primarily tests your knowledge of sentence structure.
• The third part of the test is reading comprehension with multiple-choice questions.

The total working time is 60 minutes.
In each of the test parts, more than 40 percent of the assessment units must be achieved.

As a rule, around 600 to 800 hours of German lessons are considered sufficient preparation for the German entrance test (competence level: around B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​).

Information about the English placement test

• Applicants for the G-course must - after passing the German entrance test - prove knowledge of English in a placement test. (Exception: You have applied for a humanities subject for which knowledge of Latin is required.)

The test consists of three parts (reading comprehension, C-test, text production).

Reading comprehension and text production are similar to

Preliminary English Test (PET) from the University of Cambridge.

When producing text, correct sentences must be formed from given modules. So no coherent text is required.

The placement test to check English skills for G courses takes place in the first week of the semester.
