Applied Computer Science

Ruhr-University Bochum

Undergraduate Winter Semester

Applied Computer Science looks into questions such as ...

  • How does the systematic development of software work?
  • How can we solve problems occurring in different area of application using the methods and processes of computer science?
  • Which resources are required to have computers solve certain tasks?
  • Which types of problems cannot be solved by a machine within a reasonable period of time?
  • How can software projects be planned, managed and controlled?

Computer science is everywhere: Like almost no other science, it permeates almost all areas of our lives. And even where nobody sees it - hidden in smartphones, household appliances, robot controls or cars - it directs, regulates, measures and warns them. Computer science enables smaller and smaller products, faster and faster processes. The computer science problems to be solved become more complex and extensive. Consequently, specialized knowledge from many different disciplines is needed.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum, with its twenty faculties, offers ideal conditions for students to acquire this knowledge in order to solve such complex IT problems. The study of applied computer science offers not only the theoretical foundations of computer science and mathematics, but also a broad range of training in computer science applications. The aim of the study is to impart structural thinking and knowledge acquisition skills as a basis.
