Программа обучения "Architecture" в Technische Universität Darmstadt

Architektur

The Technical University of Darmstadt is one of the leading German universities in general and in the field of architecture in particular. This program is designed for 6 study semesters. Unfortunately, this is not enough for the graduate to be included in the official register of architects and, accordingly, for an independent practice in the field of architecture. However, this deficiency can easily be remedied by completing the Master of Architecture program here at the Technical University of Darmstadt. If you get a diploma sooner, you can use it at work faster and, accordingly, start your professional activity as an employee faster.

Another advantage of the Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt is the significant emphasis on practice as well as the involvement of former graduates in actively engaging current students in practical activities during their studies at the university.

The main task of architects is the planning, drafting, design and construction of buildings.

The focus of the architecture studies at the TU Darmstadt is the creative design. Further constructive, artistic and historical-scientific areas are grouped around this. Systematic transfer of knowledge and creative and playful elements are thus intertwined. Building construction and urban development are understood as a unit. The areas are: historical basics, design and presentation, construction, building technology, building planning and urban planning.

The focus of teaching each semester is a central design project to which the majority of the other courses in this semester are directly or indirectly related. This project is designed alternately by the areas of spatial design, building construction, building theory and urban planning.

The architecture department is organized into six specialist groups: Historical Basics, Design and Representation, Construction, Building Planning, Urban Planning, Building Technology. These cover the broad spectrum of teaching and research topics at the Department of Architecture at the TU Darmstadt and reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the architecture education.

Architects deal with the planning, drafting, design and construction of residential houses, public buildings and industrial buildings. Her tasks also include the design of complex urban development systems at home and abroad as well as the takeover of renovations. Technical and constructive issues must be taken into account, as well as, for example, design, economic, cultural-social, ecological and legal aspects and requirements. Ideally, functionality, aesthetics and the context / target group relationship are closely related in the work of the architects.

It is unfortunately not always easy for architects to start their careers, as a large number of architects have already been trained in recent years, but job vacancies and construction activities have not kept pace with it. Architects are now active in many areas. Architects very often set up their own office as “generalists”. In addition, there is also the possibility of working as an employed architect in large offices, then possibly specializing in just one or a few areas (e.g. tenders). Other fields in which architects can work are municipal and other authorities (e.g. building authorities), engineering and construction offices, the real estate industry, consulting and expert activities (self-employed or e.g. for insurance) and the construction industry / property developers. As “facility managers”, architects optimize the profitability of buildings. Some architects specialize in certain areas such as renovation and / or energy-efficient construction, etc. Due to the aesthetic-artistic side of the architecture degree, there are interfaces to professional fields such as photography, design, advertising and graphics. And finally, women architects can also be employed by monument protection offices, in museums, in journalism, in the art trade or in (humanities) scientific research (e.g. art history).

It is therefore important, in addition to your studies, to gain your own practical experience at an early stage in architecture offices or other relevant institutions, to prove your general suitability for practice and to establish contacts. The prospect of a good position is increased by the willingness to move professionally, also abroad. A good command of the English language is particularly recommended if you have an international focus.

In addition, in the case of the B.Sc. Architecture, it should be noted that a bachelor's degree (so far) is not sufficient for a chamber entry and work as a self-employed architect, as you have to have studied architecture for at least 8 semesters. We therefore recommend completing a master’s degree.

Chamber registration

A bachelor's degree is not sufficient to register with a chamber and work as a freelance architect, as you must have studied architecture for at least eight semesters. In Hesse (as at the TU Darmstadt) 10 semesters (B. Sc. And M. Sc.) Are now regarded as a standard degree in architecture. All graduates of the B. Sc. Architecture at the TU Darmstadt are guaranteed a master’s place at FB15, regardless of the final grade, etc.

A six-weeks construction internship must be completed by the time the Bachelor thesis is registered at the latest.

There are 27 modules in the Bachelor course, which are spread over the six semesters as follows:

  • In each semester, a draft (10 CP = 33% of the total performance) of changing subject areas with specific thematic focuses as well as four additional modules (5 CP each, an additional 66%) on individual topics of the architecture course is offered >
  • A focus within the B. Sc. is not planned, the course is generalist.
  • The thesis in the 6th semester comprises 15 CP and corresponds to a draft of the master’s program.

The course is completed with the bachelor thesis, i.e. a design task. The focus on building construction or town planning can be chosen. With the Bachelor of Science, students gain a first professional qualification and admission to the postgraduate Master of Science course. All Bachelor graduates at TU Darmstadt are entitled to a Master’s degree in this subject.
