Art History

Friedrich–Alexander University Erlangen–Nürnberg

Undergraduate Winter Semester

The Bachelor's degree aims at a well-founded technical education, which enables the students to deal critically and reflectively with works of fine art in their historical context and their own historical development. Knowledge is imparted about the historically structured sub-areas of Middle, Modern and Latest Art History.

The study of art history is structured:

  • thematically according to the genres of architecture, painting, sculpture and applied art as well as the new art forms of the 20th century,
  • iconographically according to religious, mythological and profane content and their respective objects,
  • methodically according to a spectrum of questions: analysis of the forms, evaluation of written sources, cultural and social-historical aspects and iconology.

Another important part of the course is the history of the subject itself - the development of its theoretical, methodological and aesthetic positions.

Through the acquisition of the most important art-related skills and methods as well as information, communication and presentation skills, the bachelor's degree enables students to deal with works of art and art-historical contexts from the early Middle Ages to the present in European or increasingly modern global space, modern or modern.
