Studying Biophysics is ideal for those of you who are interested in physics as well as biology and chemistry. The interdisciplinary bachelor's and master's degree program offers training in the physical, chemical and biological fundamentals of biophysics that is unique in Germany. The study program is designed in such a way that graduates not only find prospects in biophysical professional fields, but also in physical, chemical or biological-pharmacological fields.

The course is supported by the departments of physics, biology and chemistry: the investigation of interdisciplinary issues in biophysics often follows completely new approaches that can only arise in cooperation between these three areas. In the course of study, equivalent basics of the three natural sciences are taught and the basics of mathematics and computer science are also included.

Study periods at adequate universities abroad have advantages for students. Therefore, the Department of Physics welcomes and encourages the intention to complete 1-2 semesters abroad.

The main advantages of a period of study abroad are learning a foreign language more quickly and comprehensively, getting used to a different or at least slightly different culture, i. H. Getting to know the country and people in a normal situation (in contrast to e.g. vacation stays). In contrast to many other subjects, the physics that is taught is the same everywhere, at most the teaching content differs in terms of selection and degree of difficulty.

In the first semester, the Biophysics 1 module introduces you to the interdisciplinary way of thinking in biophysics - modules on biophysics accompany you through the entire bachelor's degree. Furthermore, in the first semester you can expect an introduction to inorganic chemistry, genetics, cell biology, plant physiology and the first half of the mathematics course.

In the second semester, the classic physics training starts with the topics of mechanics and heat, you learn the mathematical basics of physics and complete the mathematics training. In addition, the training in physical chemistry begins, which is continued in the 3rd semester. Animal physiology also awaits you in biology in the third semester.

In the 4th semester, the physics education in the field of electromagnetism and optics is continued - the topics are treated here both experimentally and mathematically theoretically. You can also expect the first part of the training in organic chemistry, which is continued in the 5th semester. In the last two semesters, another large subject area of ​​chemistry awaits you: biochemistry - one module each. After the project work, the bachelor thesis concludes the course.

    The Department of Physics offers a portfolio of modern and well-structured courses. In addition to an excellent mentoring relationship between lecturers and students, all courses are characterized by the use of innovative teaching-learning methods and the latest media. In this way, students can not only calculate theoretical exercises during the first semester, but also compare the theory with smartphone and tablet-based experiments. In the physical beginner internships, they also experiment with intelligent data glasses (so-called smart glasses such as the Microsoft HoloLens) and thus learn how to deal with and assess future technologies at an early stage. Even in advanced courses, students receive individual feedback opportunities through voting tools, even during lectures with a larger number of participants. The new teaching-learning formats used in the Physics department give students a proven greater understanding of physics than in traditional formats and are therefore well prepared for the requirements of future professions. In the multimedia distance learning course Early Entry into Physics Studies (FiPS), students can start studying physics before they graduate from high school. The face-to-face studies can then be completed in a shorter period of time.
