Описание программы обучения "Chemical Biotechnology"

One of the key technologies for making industrial processes more ecological and cost-effective and developing renewable raw materials for industrial use is industrial biotechnology, more appropriately referred to as chemical biotechnology. It uses biochemical, chemical, microbiological and process engineering methods to produce organic basic and fine chemicals using optimized enzymes, cells or microorganisms. By replacing conventional industrial processes with biotechnological processes and using biological raw materials instead of fossil raw materials, both energy requirements and the use of raw materials can be minimised or put on a bio-based basis. Process development in biotechnology requires the interaction of biology, chemistry and process engineering.

This complex topic calls for new scientists and technologists who are able to work on an interdisciplinary basis and master the challenges of process engineering as well as economic and ecological aspects thanks to their expertise in the field of scientific fundamentals. The aim of the course is to gain comprehensive knowledge in the field of biotechnological chemical-material conversion processes by combining chemistry, engineering and biosciences (areas of focus: Enzyme Engineering / Metabolic Engineering). By being able to choose modules from the field of economics, among other things, the specialist knowledge can be placed in a larger, economic context.

Given the intensive cultivation of practical, methodological, and analytical skills, the bachelor's program in Chemical Biotechnology provides you first and foremost with a degree that qualifies you for a professional career. By way of example, you have the opportunity to work as an engineer in the chemical industry or as a scientist at a research institute, be it within a university or independent of such an institution, or at a state authority. After the successful completion of the bachelor's program in Chemical Biotechnology, you can pursue a master's program with a similarly interdisciplinary profile so as to accrue a further qualification required for a highly skilled scientific occupation.

An internship is not required for admission to this program.

From the first semester onwards, skills required for practical laboratory work and scientific experiments are acquired during the course of extensive internship modules. In the fifth semester, a major research internship worth 10 CP accompanies your studies.

Required modules:

1. Semester:
Mathematics, Physics, General Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Practical General Chemistry, Cell and Microbiology

2nd semester:
Statistics, basics of computer science, basics of organic chemistry, internship basics of organic chemistry, internship microbiology, thermodynamics of mixtures and mass transport

3rd semester:
Bioinformatics, instrumental analysis and spectroscopy, biochemistry, internship in biochemistry, molecular biology and genetic engineering

4th semester:
Organic chemistry for advanced students, enzymes and their reactions, chemical reaction technology, thermal process engineering

5th semester:
Bioprocess engineering, internship in bioprocess engineering, internship in general process engineering, research internship

6th semester:
Plant planning, Bachelor's Thesis

Elective modules
From the 4th semester onwards, subject-specific elective modules worth 19 credits are chosen.

Chemistry Division:
Catalysis, chemistry and structure of biopolymers, electrochemistry, basics of the material use of biomass

Molecular Biology Division:
Methods of systems biology, protein chemistry, biopolymers, computational biology & Functional Genomics

Process engineering area:
Technical thermodynamics, downstream processing, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, microreaction technology

In addition, a free elective module (interdisciplinary module) is chosen:
Fundamentals of economics, basics of business administration, technical English, Spanish, communication and presentation, introduction to programming, introduction to medicinal and aromatic plants

Das breite Fächerspektrum, das neben den traditionellen Ausrichtungen Anorganische Chemie, Organische Chemie und Physikalische Chemie schon lange Zeit durch die Fächer Technische Chemie, Radiopharmazie, Lebensmittelchemie, Theoretische Chemie und Wasserchemie ergänzt war, wurde schon früh mit einem Lehrstuhl für Biotechnologie und durch einen Lehrstuhl für Bauchemie erweitert.
