Описание программы обучения "Civil Engineering"

The activity of the civil engineer can be described mainly as designing and calculating the structural elements and entire assemblies as well as the implementation of the plan in reality. Environmental technology is also a rapidly growing area of application for civil engineers. In principle, the tasks of the civil engineer are the most diverse of all engineering professions, both for ecological and economic reasons.

The master's degree in civil engineering deepens the existing technical and methodological knowledge that was acquired in the bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related degree. Civil engineers work as employees, freelancers and civil servants in construction companies, public administrations, engineering offices, transport companies, in the real estate industry and in many interdisciplinary fields of work. You work in teams and often organize cooperation between different disciplines.

What you will learn

Civil engineers deal with the conception, planning, manufacture and operation of buildings and infrastructure (traffic, supply and disposal) on an engineering basis. Designing, planning, calculating, constructing and organizing are important job characteristics. In particular, they deal with:

  • Concrete, steel, wood and glass structures (e.g. buildings, dams, bridges and tunnels)
  • Infrastructure systems (e.g. water supply and disposal, traffic systems)
  • Environmental protection and regenerative energies (e.g. energetic renovation, geothermal energy and hydropower)
  • safety from natural hazards (e.g. flood protection and earthquake-proof construction, fire protection)
  • The management of demanding processes (e.g. approval procedures, construction site management, building in existing stock, building while maintaining traffic flows)
  • optimization in terms of safety, comfort, energy requirements, comfort, sustainability, costs

Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Civil Engineering"

Civil engineers find employment in permanent positions, on a freelance basis and as officials in: construction companies, public administration, engineering consultancies, transportation companies, real estate markets, the building material industry, as well as in a variety of interdisciplinary fields of work. #

Civil engineers work in teams and often coordinate cooperation among different disciplines.

Ожидаемые результаты программы обучения "Civil Engineering"

As a graduate you possess enhanced skills and competencies in the cross-disciplinary areas of civil engineering. You are able to deal independently with complex tasks relating to your specialization. In your activities you take into consideration social, economic and ecological aspects, as well as discipline-related ones.

Moreover, you have broadened your knowledge in your chosen subject areas and developed an individual set of competencies. Your interdisciplinary approach allows you to apply your specialist knowledge beyond the boundaries of your discipline.

Международный обмен по программе обучения "Civil Engineering"

As part of the Master's degree, there are many opportunities to spend a short or longer period abroad - for a degree or an internship.

In addition to the popular ERASMUS+ program, there are a number of other exchange programs.

In the Master’s program there are four options for having modules passed abroad recognised.

In the case of equivalency recognition, a subject from the partner university is recognized for an equivalent subject from the course. The TUM chair responsible for the relevant subject decides whether the modules are equivalent based on the two module descriptions. The forms for the recognition of equivalence are created by the respective examination administration.

When crediting as a partner university module in the cross-sectional specialization or in the area of supplementary subjects, there is no need for an equivalent module to be available at the TUM. If the modules passed abroad fit into the subject spectrum of the degree program and do not represent a duplication of modules that have already been passed, they can be taken over directly. This requires a discussion with a mentor who will decide whether to take over the modules. Up to 30 credits from elective modules can be taken over as part of the master’s degree.
Students who are on leave of absence while studying abroad can bring in up to 20 credits per semester from the partner university without the leave of absence being revoked.

An internship abroad that meets the technical requirements of the internship office is recognized as a compulsory internship. Nevertheless, it is advisable to talk to the internship office before the stay abroad.

Учебный план программы обучения "Civil Engineering"

The students choose four of the specializations offered. The fourth subject can be replaced by an individual interdisciplinary specialization that includes content from architecture, mechanical engineering or computer science, for example. One of the selected fields of study serves as a main subject in order to structure the course content in a meaningful way towards a specific job profile. Each specialization consists of mandatory and freely selectable modules. Modules from the entire range of TUM, for example in the area of languages and communication, supplement the content.

The title Master of Science can be obtained after four semesters. The conclusion is the master's thesis, which is written in one of the chosen specializations. Various double-degree programs, the ATHENS exchange program and other offers enable high international student mobility.

content

The interdisciplinary specialization can come from the field of architecture, mechanical engineering or, for example, computer science. As a further possibility, it can be used to supplement the other three specializations with further, sensibly selected courses (modules) in civil engineering.

In order to be able to support the students in the best possible way during their studies, one of the specializations is made the main subject. The supervisor in this field acts as a mentor and should support and advise the student, especially with regard to the meaningful choice of specializations. The leading subject not only pays attention to a career-related choice of course content, but also, e.g. B. during a stay abroad, on the accuracy of the chosen content or modules for the respective professional vision of the candidate. This is particularly important when choosing an interdisciplinary specialization, since the compulsory and elective modules must be approved by the main subject.

Each area of specialization is designed through mandatory and freely selectable modules. Compulsory modules of a specialization are reflected in the catalog of compulsory modules, which has a scope of 12 ECTS. This catalog of compulsory modules guarantees that the basic knowledge required for the relevant specialization is acquired. This basic knowledge can be expanded by elective modules in the relevant specialization. The scope of the additional elective modules to be taken for each specialization must be at least 6 ECTS. This ensures that in addition to the basic knowledge, there is really a deepening in the selected area. In the case of an interdisciplinary specialization, the number of compulsory modules is also 12 ECTS, the number of elective modules is 9 ECTS.

In addition to the elective modules provided in the specializations, students must acquire 12 ECTS from the entire range of elective modules in civil engineering. If you choose a cross-sectional specialization, there are 9 credits. The students are thus given the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of other special areas of civil engineering that are not offered in the specializations and to acquire skills that go beyond the special areas of civil engineering. In order to guarantee the general education component in the civil engineering degree, 6 credits must be selected from the total offer at TUM. Sometimes language courses are often taken by the students, which contribute to an extended communication ability of the students, especially in an international context.

The master's degree is completed with the master's thesis, which is written in one of the chosen specializations.
