On this course students acquire in-depth specialist knowledge in the core areas of Computer Science. These include: databases, programming, mathematics, the architecture of computers and computer networks, and system programming. Over and above this, examples of current computer science topics with relevance to society include multimedia, bioinformatics, security and man-machine interfaces. Furthermore, students learn about algorithms and data structures, theoretical and practical computer science and the application of these areas in other specialist fields, such as medicine or electrical engineering. To this end, as a minor subject they also cover the essential features of an area other than computer science.

In comparison with other faculties in Germany, the Faculty of Computer Science in Magdeburg offers an above average proportion of practical and application-oriented subjects. The course is oriented towards fundamental principles and includes study of a minor subject and a professional placement.

Information Technology, worldwide networking and the advent of computer-based systems in all social, business and private areas offers great potential. Therefore, graduates are valued specialists with diverse profiles.

Possible occupations are in the design and implementation of technical systems in the data processing industry. Examples include computer manufacturers, telecommunications companies, software houses, users of administration systems, technical industries, multimedia service providers and consulting firms. Project management and development of new software-based products.

The Master’s degree opens up additional prospects - from research and development to business management.

Учебный план программы обучения "Computer Science"

This course is divided into core, mandatory and mandatory elective subjects. The core modules are attended by students on every course offered by the Faculty of Computer Science (e.g. mathematics, key and methodological competences). The mandatory area is tailored to each course, and the mandatory electives focus on the students’ specialisations. In addition, at the start of the course, an additional, minor subject must be selected. This Bachelor’s degree course may be followed directly by the corresponding Master’s degree course. Specialist tracks This type of course offers students the option to specialise within the Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. Various study tracks are offered. These are mostly interdisciplinary and focus either on the scientific areas of emphasis within the Faculty or future career paths. The successfully completed study track may be identified on the Bachelor’s degree certificate if desired.

The Faculty of Computer Science offers a higher than average share of practical and application-oriented research and teaching priorities. As an engineering faculty, it covers all core areas of computer science. These include computer visualistics, business informatics and engineering computer science. Computer scientists are concerned with the systematic processing of information - computers are a tool and a medium for the practical implementation of theoretical concepts. As a key technology of the 21st century, it has great importance in research and teaching for all scientific disciplines. The research profile of the faculty is characterized by the three main areas of image, knowledge and interaction. A large number of current research projects are handled across faculties and can also be assigned to the main research areas of the university.
