Electrical engineering is one of the classic disciplines of engineering and lies at the heart of almost all cutting-edge technologies and developments, whether it be electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, medical technology, robotics, computer chips, information technology or mobile phones. It focuses in particular on all applications involving electricity and its related physical effects. In addition, modern electrical engineering has extended its reach to cover a wide array of related fields.

The classic areas of concentration in electrical engineering are energy technology, electrical machines, automation and control engineering, telecommunications engineering and information theory, measurement technology, microwave and high-frequency engineering and electronics.

Durch die fachliche Breite der Forschung der Ingenieurwissenschaften an der Universität Ulm ist auch das Studium breit und vielfältig ausgerichtet. Dies wird z.B. deutlich durch zukunftsweisende Themen der Forschung und Lehre in Bereichen wie:

  • Regelungsverfahren und Fahrzeugsysteme
  • Integrierte Schaltungen und Hochfrequenzsysteme
  • Informationstheorie und Informationssystemtechnik
  • Nanomaterialien und Bauelemente

Im Unterschied zu Hochschulen, die oft von Beginn an auf bestimmte Anwendungsbereiche spezialisieren, ist das Ingenieursstudium an der Universität Ulm bewusst breiter und allgemeiner angelegt.

Den Studierenden wird ein intensives Grundlagenstudium geboten, in dem neben einer Ausbildung in Mathematik, Physik und Informatik alle elektrotechnischen Grundlagen vermittelt werden. Ab dem 3. Semester kommen dann immer mehr Vertiefungsmöglichkeiten dazu, die insbesondere als Vorbereitung auf ein spezialisiertes Masterstudium vorbereiten.

The graduate possesses a sound knowledge base in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science and has learned to work scientifically. He is therefore versatile in industry, in research and development, production, maintenance and sales.

The field of energy technology and electrical machines focuses on the transformation of primary energy forms into electrical energy; its transmission and distribution through intelligent networks; and the transformation of this energy primarily into mechanical or thermal energy. It also deals with battery technology, electromobility, renewable energy systems such as photovoltaics, wind power and hydroelectric systems as well as many other energy systems.

Automation and control engineering focuses on the collection of measurement signals, the processing of such signals and how they are used to achieve a desired result. A thermostat would be a common example. By contrast, other systems such as power plants, wind power systems or robots require highly complex control systems. Or consider self-driving vehicles which must capture information on the environment, process and model it in real time so that it can be used to safely and autonomously navigate street traffic.

That leads us to information processing, information theory and information transmission. All of these fall under the heading of telecommunications engineering. How does speech, text or an mp3 file fly through the air and into our smartphones even as we speed along in an automobile or train – and do so with no static or distortion? To answer these question, one must have an understanding of modern transmisson processes, encoding of data and how it is securely saved.

How is this information then sent through antennas? How must these antennas be arranged in a large city in which hundreds of individuals want to place calls, or in essence to send radio signals, simultaneously? How can one measure the distance between vehicles with electromagnetic waves or how can one follow the movements of aircraft using radar? These questions fall into the domain of high-frequency engineering, which focuses on fields and waves and much more.

As electronics progresses towards microelectronics and indeed nanoelectronics, these systems are able to execute electric and electronic switching on an ever smaller scale. It begins with computer chips, but it's also about deploying an airbag in a car, medical implants such as auditory and visual prostheses, autonomous sensors that draw energy from the environment and which can, for instance, monitor environmental parameters for years without using batteries. Intelligent functionality with minimal energy consumption in the smallest possible space – that is microelectronics.

The list of disciplines within electrical engineering goes on and on and the boundaries between the various areas of specialty are fluid. For this reason, university studies in electrical engineering offers students the opportunity to gain a broad overview of subjects and topics, as well as to acquire competences in more than one area of specialty.

The world is growing together - this also applies, and above all, to science. In order to meet the demands of the job market, a study visit to a foreign university becomes more and more important. As a student at the University of Ulm, you have the opportunity to apply for one or two semesters abroad at numerous universities - both in Europe as part of the ERASMUS program and at non-European universities.

The bachelor’s degree programme in electrical engineering has a primarily scientific orientation and provides students with the basic skills necessary for engineering work, preparing graduates in the best way for pursuing a master’s degree at a university. In addition, this bachelor’s degree programme includes hands-on projects, key qualifications and an optional industry placement, thereby qualifying graduates to begin a career.

Modules in mathematics, physics and computer science build the foundation for extensive understanding of the core subjects in electrical engineering.

A special emphasis is placed on providing students with additional qualifications in the areas of business, English, presentation techniques and team and communication skills. Students demonstrate their ability to work independently by completing a bachelor’s thesis.
