Учебный план программы обучения "Environmental Sciences"

In the Leuphana Bachelor with Environmental Sciences major, you combine specialist knowledge with solution-oriented thinking and responsible action. The Leuphana Semester and Complementary Studies provide the framework for dealing with socially relevant topics outside your chosen major/minor combination. They are an integral part of the Leuphana Bachelor and give you the freedom to immerse yourself in different fields of knowledge and to develop viable solutions for the challenges of the future together with other college students.

The Environmental Sciencesmajor is embedded in the interdisciplinary College study model with Leuphana Semester, Minor and Complementary Studies. You start your Bachelor studies with the Leuphana semester. The first semester at Leuphana College gives you the opportunity to deal fundamentally with science. The Minor deepens or supplements your Major with another subject area. In Complementary Studies you have the freedom to pursue your thirst for knowledge individually by immersing yourself in a different field of knowledge each semester.

Study structure: B.Sc. Environmental Sciences

In the Leuphana semester, you will deal with science and scientificity in a very fundamental way. This will train your critical thinking skills so that you can question what you already know; this will teach you to choose the appropriate approach for systematically gaining knowledge and you will know how to deal responsibly with scientific knowledge. At the same time, you will receive an introduction to environmental sciences. This means that you will deal with the basics of natural sciences and social sciences. The discussion of the principles of scientific thinking and working methods in general and the introduction to the major in concrete terms form the foundation for the interdisciplinary bachelor's degree in environmental sciences.

The minor deepens the major in environmental sciences or supplements it with another subject area. You have the choice: With the minor in spatial sciences, you will complete your environmental science knowledge. Other minors enable you to gain an interdisciplinary qualification.

The complementary course gives you the opportunity to individually pursue your thirst for knowledge by immersing yourself in a completely different field of knowledge, such as business psychology, gender relations and spatial structures, Islamic law or design thinking. By stepping out of your own specialist field and engaging with other specialist aspects, you gain an understanding of the diversity of scientific cultures as well as inter- and transdisciplinary skills.

Course content: B.Sc. Environmental Sciences

The Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences is interdisciplinary. You learn both human and natural science perspectives and choose your individual focus during the course of your studies.

Following the Leuphana semester, in the second and third semesters you will acquire the technical and methodological basics of the natural and human sciences such as mathematics and statistics, ecology, environmental chemistry, methods of environmental communication, public sustainability management and environmental management.

In the fourth semester and also in the following fifth semester, you can set individual focuses and develop your individual profile. To do this, you will take a total of three elective modules from the natural sciences and/or humanities, such as research fields in sustainability communication; methods of sustainability management; concepts, methods and instruments of environmental planning; biodiversity and distribution, degradation and effects of chemical substances in the environment.

A core part of the curriculum in the fourth semester is sustainability science research projects, in which you work with partners from practice to develop concepts for real social concerns of sustainable development, such as sustainable urban development, sustainable consumption and nature conservation management in urban green spaces.

In the fifth semester, you will also be introduced to the ethical principles of environmental and sustainability sciences. In the sixth semester, you will deal with a specific question from the field of environmental and sustainability sciences in an interdisciplinary manner and complete your studies with a bachelor's thesis on a topic of your choice. Many topics for bachelor's theses are derived from the sustainability science projects and continue them intensively.

Upon completion of your studies in environmental sciences, you will receive a Bachelor of Science (B.S.).

As part of your studies in environmental sciences, there is no mandatory internship, but it is desirable and useful.

    School of Sustainability
    Leuphana University of Lüneburg

Sustainability has many facets. Inter- and transdisciplinary research and teaching characterize the School of Sustainability. Scientists in our research projects work together in the laboratory, on the heath, in the grassland, in the classroom, with the city administration, with farmers, with non-governmental organizations, with companies, with students in the lecture hall and of course at their desks.

Furthermore, we work with regional and national political actors, e.g. ministries, as well as international organizations, e.g. UNEP, UNESCO, EU. We are part of national and international bodies, e.g. sustainability advisory boards of companies, member of the German Sustainability Award, World Biodiversity Council (IPBES), in order to contribute to social change with scientific findings.
