Ожидаемые результаты программы обучения "English Literature and Culture"

The core of English studies is the study of the literature and culture of Great Britain and Ireland. However, the subject does not only exhaust itself in these traditional areas, but also pays tribute to the changed global perspective by also opening up the cultural and literary areas of the former Commonwealth countries - the so-called New Literatures in English. One of the fundamental goals of English studies is to impart methodological competence in dealing with texts, a skill that is the basis for success in any field of work. This aspired critical thinking includes the ability to reason logically, to solve problems, to interpret informedly and to think independently. Although texts are explored in their contexts, a central focus remains on critical, theoretically reflected philological text work that pursues the question of the interaction between text and people. In order to provide as comprehensive access to literature as possible, a variety of approaches are tried out: narrative, literary and cultural theory, but also cognitive science findings and gender research play an important role here. This versatility helps students to acquire analytical and critical skills that can easily be transferred to other work contexts with profit, but also mark a fundamental personal gain. The understanding gained here with regard to methodological plurality and diversity of approaches, which are often experienced as incompatible in direct comparison, is essential for developing a critical attitude and conveying (inter)cultural competence in dealing with the other.

In addition, attractive focal points result from the research and areas of interest of the individual lecturers. This includes early modern literature and culture, contemporary drama, the Anglophone novel of the 19th to 21st centuries, Anglophone contemporary poetry, cultural and literary theory and Scottish Studies.
