When you think of media, you think of television, newspapers, radio, and the Internet. But there is much more to media than that. In the constantly changing media sector, competent specialists are needed who have ready-to-use theoretical and practical knowledge of this subject in its many different forms. A degree in European Media Studies provides insights into the aesthetic and technical, symbolic and communicative aspects of the media in the mass media, but also beyond it. It enables you to think outside the box from a predominantly theoretical-cultural and practical-creative perspective in order to train precisely these specialists.

Ожидаемые результаты программы обучения "European Media Studies"

With a successfully completed Bachelor's degree in European Media Studies, you will have basic skills for the analysis, design and criticism of the media as well as content-related cultural management. In particular, the study objectives are:

  • a fundamental understanding of the cultural conditioning of the media and the cultural processes that are produced, influenced and changed by the media
  • the ability to analyse and evaluate culture and media in Europe
  • sovereignty in dealing with the constantly changing requirements of the media sector
  • knowledge of media theory, history and aesthetics, as well as art and new media
  • the ability to evaluate and reflect on creative and artistic processes as well as the critical analysis of media content and forms
  • the creative conception and development of media formats and their design
  • the ability to develop your own projects

In addition, a further research-oriented master's degree can be added. The New Media, as well as their theoretical and practical analysis, require specialists for their program administration and development careers who have a profound knowledge of the theory, history and aesthetics of the media and who are able to recognize and describe the effects of media processes on social awareness and to respond to them in practice.

In addition, there is the entire spectrum of media research in the university sector. Given the rapid changes in the situation in and around the media, training cannot be specifically geared towards a single career profile; rather, students should be enabled to adapt quickly and competently to new career fields in the areas mentioned.

Учебный план программы обучения "European Media Studies"

The consecutive degree program in European Media Studies, which has existed since 2000, is carried out in equal cooperation between the University of Potsdam and the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences. It is characterized by a focus on media theory and cultural studies and combines theoretical and practical design knowledge and skills in relation to media in the broadest sense.

The primary goal of the course is to impart skills for the analysis, design and criticism of media processes, taking into account cultural economics and the basics of media law. In particular, the course focuses on the basics, structures and products of the media. Media epistemologies, media aesthetics and history as well as concepts and forms of media design and their artistic reflection with a focus on digital media play a special role. The focus on Europe is particularly evident in the intensive examination of European media law and various (historical, current and critical) perspectives on European cultural history. In keeping with the European idea of cross-border connections, European Media Studies is cross-border in nature and its international perspective is not limited to Europe.
