The two focus areas of the German Language and Literature degree program are the study of German-language literature, which is examined in its literary history, cultural history and media dimensions from its beginnings to the present day, and the study of the German language from its early stages as a language up to its modern day form. In Bonn, German Language and Literature is understood as a broad-based discipline that is closely aligned with cultural and media studies, closely cooperating with other disciplines as well.
The German Language and Literature master's degree program offers students a primarily research-oriented education: courses are closely aligned with current research questions and students participate in on-going research projects, gaining insight into forms of academic organization and presentation. The degree program offers a wide range of options as students choose a profile as individual focus for their studies, allowing them to pursue their personal interests and inclinations. Possible profiles are Medieval Studies, Linguistics and Modern German Literature.

The subject of German studies in Bonn is the diachronic and synchronic linguistics of German, medieval studies related to the language, literature and culture of the German Middle Ages, and modern German literary studies, which includes media studies related to aesthetic communication and fields of work in cultural studies. The individual disciplines are linked in many ways in research and teaching.
German linguistics is concerned with research into the German language of the present day and its history, as well as with language change processes. The focus is on the linguistic system of German (in contrast to other individual languages), and on the other hand on the different uses that language users make of their language under different circumstances (in official and private contexts, in literature, in the new media, in a certain region, in the context of migration, etc.).
Germanic Medieval Studies deals with German literature of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period, the linguistic appearance of the texts, their transmission in (partly illustrated) manuscripts and prints, their history, their different genres, their themes, motifs and topoi, their forms of structure, their narrative and speech styles, their embedding in the most diverse discourses and cultural practices, their participation in different traditions, their references to other literatures and their reception up to the present day.
The range of courses offered by Modern German Literary Studies includes the analysis and research of German literature and its history from 17th century to the present day. At the same time, teaching in this area also documents the change that the subject has been actively pursuing for about three decades. From a philological discipline in the narrow sense, it has changed into a subject that is increasingly oriented towards cultural studies, is also open to media studies questions and is broadly networked across disciplines.

University of BonnWith 9,000 students, the Faculty of Philosophy is the largest of the seven faculties of the University of Bonn. It comprises eleven institutes and nine centers of humanities and social sciences. The Faculty of Philosophy is also involved in three transfaculty centers. Three museums are affiliated to the faculty.
The faculty presents itself today as a complex combination of philosophical, historical, philological and social science disciplines. Through the research and teaching of recognized scholars, she occupies a prominent international position in the academic world.
The broad spectrum of available subjects is also evident in a large number of highly differentiated research projects. The eleven institutes also have a large number of research areas, such as area studies, antiquity and its heritage, the European Middle Ages in transcultural comparison, media discourse and media performance in history and present, Germany and Europe in a global context. In addition, places of coordinated research are the cross-institute centers of the Faculty of Philosophy.
