The Master's degree program in German Studies is a general German studies degree program in which all subject areas are involved (linguistics, modern German literature, older German literature, literature communication, language and literature didactics, German as a foreign language). It combines high academic standards with a proven practical orientation. As part of the Master's degree program, you will deepen your knowledge of literary history, cultural studies, literary theory, language theory, language practice, language comparison, literature communication and didactics. The degree program enables you to in-depth study and set individual priorities in the three subject areas of modern German literature, older German literature and German linguistics. A semester abroad is possible, but not compulsory.

The MA course in German Studies

- qualifies for a doctorate in German studies.
The master's course leads to a second academic and professional qualification in the subject of German studies. It provides in-depth systematic and historical knowledge of German linguistics, including German as a foreign language, as well as older and modern German literary studies, literature teaching and subject didactics. It enables students to reflect methodically on the subjects of the subject, to present them using examples and to apply the skills acquired to new subjects and questions. The course enables specialist in-depth study and individual focus in the three areas of modern German literature, older German literature and German linguistics.

The Bamberg Master's degree program in German Studies combines high academic standards with a proven practical orientation. The degree program enables specialist in-depth study and individual focus in the three subject areas of Modern German Literature, Older German Literature and German Linguistics.
The degree program comprises 7 modules from the areas of Older German Literature, Modern German Literature, German Linguistics as well as the theory and practice of literature teaching or subject didactics or German as a foreign language. In addition, events in an extension area offer you the opportunity to acquire interdisciplinary knowledge across subject boundaries.
Modules
The Master's degree program in German Studies is based on a modularized course of study in 3 module groups. In module group 1, one module from each of the academic subject areas of Modern German Literature, Older German Literature or German Linguistics must be taken. In addition, there is an elective module from the areas of German subject didactics, literature teaching or German as a foreign language. The two modules not selected can be included in the extension area. In module group 2, students choose two modules from the academic subject areas of Modern German Literature, Old German Literature or German Linguistics, whereby no subject area may be taken twice. In module group 3, students choose a module from the academic subject areas of Modern German Literature, Older German Literature or German Linguistics.
Module group 1
- Modern German Literature: Literary History (compulsory module, 10 ECTS points)
- Older German Literature: Literary History (compulsory module, 10 ECTS points)
- German Linguistics I: Grammatical Analysis (compulsory module, 10 ECTS points)
- German Didactics (elective module, 10 ECTS points)* or Theory and Practice of Literature Teaching (elective module, 10 ECTS points)* or German as a Foreign Language (elective module, 10 ECTS points)*
* The two modules not selected can be included in the extension area
Module group 2
- Modern German literature: Literary studies (elective module, 10 ECTS points)*
- Older German literature: Literary studies (elective module, 10 ECTS points)*
- German linguistics II (elective module, 10 ECTS points)*
* 2 modules must be selected; none may be taken twice.
Module group 3
One of the 3 modules must be taken:
- Modern German literature: cultural studies and literary theory (elective module, 10 ECTS points)
- Older German literature: cultural studies and literary theory (elective module, 10 ECTS points)
- Language theory and language comparison (elective module, 10 ECTS points)
Master's thesis
The master's thesis is an independently written paper that shows that the student has in-depth knowledge of the subject studied and the ability to apply scientific methods to specific tasks in a limited time. The final thesis in the master's program in "German Studies" is usually written immediately after the 3rd semester. The processing time is six months.
Extension area
For the extension area, at least 20 ECTS points must be acquired in modules from other subjects. The modules can come from a minor subject that has already been studied, but also from any other subjects. The two elective modules from module group 1 that have not been chosen can also be included.
