The international Master's degree program "Human Computer Interaction" is a consecutive full-time study program with a regular study time of four semesters that requires completion of a Bachelor's degree program. In light of the fact that IT artefacts increasingly penetrate all areas of life and work, questions of design, implementation, acquisition and evaluation of usable and efficiently applicable software systems are the focus of studies. Special relevance is given to the design of IT artefacts for support of human action practices. In order to be able to design IT-artefacts in their connections with practical human action, basic skills in the area of interaction techniques are necessary, in particular also for mobile and ubiquitous applications, interface design, user-oriented design processes and methods, usability standards, qualitative analysis methods and integrated organization and technology development. These major contents should be complemented by required modules from the areas of media studies, media law, business administration, psychology and art. The many research activities underway at the University of Siegen in the area of Human Computer Interaction ensure close practical interlocking of research and teaching. Furthermore, an internship with a company or foreign research institute and a project paper (MA) as well as a Master's thesis are part of the Master's degree program. The HCI Master's program is the first one in this subject area at a German university. The University of Siegen was advised by an advisory council of leading scientists in this subject area when designing this degree program.

The University of Siegen has a number of partner universities around the world. In the past, HCI students have spent a term abroad in Limerick (Ireland), Peking (China) and Tulsa (USA) among other places.

Mandatory Subjects These lectures (33 LP) must be attended by all HCI-students. This is where the study foundations are laid – a general understanding of HCI in theory and practice, user experience and further relevant areas, such as research methodology and sketching techniques. Aspects of aesthetics/art are also covered. Human Computer Interaction Computer Supported Collaborative Learning Artificial Design User Experience Design Usability and Empirical Design Methods Computer Supported Collaborative Work Work and Organizational Psychology Elective Subjects The student requires a total of 24 credit points which can be independly chosen from this area. The lectures from ‘Special Aspects of HCI’ as well as ‘HCI Kombiseminare’ can be therefore attended multiple times. Each semester offers different lectures, ranging from prototyping with Axure through Arduino courses to reading classes concentrating on specific scientific works. Требования к поступающим на программу обучения "Human Computer Interaction"

Admission requirements

1) Bachelor of Science with a grade of at least 2.5 in the degree program of business information systems or a related/equivalent degree program, or in the degree program business administration with relevant specialization in business information systems or computer science, or in the degree program computer science.

2) Applicants with Bachelor's degrees from other study areas should already have prior knowledge in design and implementation (programming, in particular object-oriented programming) of software systems. The scope of results from the two areas in the Bachelor's degree program should be at least 30 ECTS credits in total. Any distribution is possible here. In this case, the grade of the underlying Bachelor's degree also must have been completed with a value of 2.5 or better.

3) Alternatively, a qualification equivalent to the Bachelor's degree can serve as the requirement for approval. The equivalence shall be determined by the study and examination board.

Important information

Language

The lessons in the degree program are mostly held in English. Only few lectures can be heard in German. Therefore, sufficient skills in English must be documented by the applicants who have not acquired their study qualification in an exclusively English-speaking facility or who have English as their native language. The following evidence is accepted: TOEFL and IBT (at least 90 credits), IELTS (at least 5.5), Cambridge-Test CAE, FCE (at least grade B) or certificates that document language skills of level B2 GeR (e.g. certificate of general university qualification).

Internship

An internship is intended for the second semester.
