This is where Intercultural German studies comes in with current research questions and investigates the central role of languages, communication and texts in everyday life, in professional and literary-artistic use for human coexistence and its shaping.

In the master's programme Intercultural German Studies, this subject is taught in a research-oriented and at the same time practice-oriented way. In particular, students become familiar with intercultural perspectives of communication styles including their rational and emotional facets in dialogue and conflict, with the German language, literature and culture, including its multilingual and historical dimensions. The expertise that students will need in order to qualify for fields of activity in institutions, companies, administration or foreign policy related to language, communication, education, culture, art or to pursue an academic career in international German and other language areas is trained academically.

The MA program in Intercultural German Studies is designed for students from Germany and abroad who aspire to responsible positions in intercultural cooperation in science, politics, administration or business. Graduates have access to a wide range of careers, especially in cultural work at home and abroad (cultural intermediary organizations) and in the teaching of linguistic and intercultural skills (intercultural training, communication consulting, German as a foreign language teaching in conjunction with professionally relevant cultural knowledge).

The focus of the course is on interdisciplinary intercultural research with particular emphasis on dialogue and communication, including the conditions of rationality, emotionality and conflict situations in cross-linguistic and cross-cultural contexts. In addition, there are theoretical foundations of the perception of difference and foreignness, of multilingualism and cultural mediation, which are founded on linguistic, literary, cultural and translation studies in the Master's course in Intercultural German Studies. Students learn about concepts of internationalization, which are to be understood as diversification (in contrast to the monolingualism of an international lingua franca, for example).

International Summer Campus
One practical field of intercultural German studies is the Summer University for Intercultural German Studies, which takes place annually in August and September on the Bayreuth university campus in cooperation with the Institute for International Communication and Foreign Cultural Work (IIK Bayreuth).

The Master's degree program in Intercultural German Studies is aimed at German and foreign students who aspire to responsible positions in intercultural cooperation, science, politics, administration or business.
During the course, students acquire general social, cultural and media skills to deal with cultural overlap situations. In detail, the following are taught:
- discourse-linguistically oriented methodological skills for analyzing intercultural interpersonal communication,
- hermeneutic text skills with a focus on cultural themes and comparisons, and
- cultural-ethnographic methods for exploring social areas, including their representations in the media or by cultural intermediary organizations.
The structure of the course also includes reflection and analysis of professional action requirements. The intercultural skills sought are aimed at the cooperative coexistence of people of different cultural backgrounds in Germany. The department is involved in research into linguistic and cultural integration processes and in the development of concepts for the further training of specialists.
Partner institutions at home and abroad that deal with the German language and culture under foreign conditions are included in the master's concept, among other things by creating study variants (double degrees and integrated curricula).
In total, students must acquire 120 ECTS points, which arise from the following areas:
- Intercultural German studies (15 ECTS)
- Intercultural linguistics (15 ECTS)
- Cultural science concepts of intercultural research (15 ECTS)
- Intercultural literary studies (15 ECTS)
- Practical and career orientation (10 ECTS)
- Research orientation (40 ECTS)
- Complementary Specialist studies (10 ECTS)

University of BayreuthResearch and teaching at the Faculty of Languages & Literatures is interdisciplinary and international, informed by a cultural studies approach and often focused on intercultural processes. The faculty offers a wide spectrum of disciplines, ranging from African Studies, English and American Studies, Arabic and Islamic Studies, German Studies and Romance Studies to Music and Theatre Studies and Media Studies. The faculty’s study programmes are both research-oriented and practice-oriented; they are all characterized by an excellent student/teacher ratio and direct contact to teaching staff.
