Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Interdisciplinary American Studies"

Our students develop the skills – critical thinking and analysis, research design and synthesis, academic writing and presentation – that will prepare them for a variety of careers in academic research and teaching, publishing, journalism, new media, cultural management, public administration, international organizations, consulting, and marketing and sales. IAS graduates are also attractive to a wide range of employers because of their excellent English language abilities and their advanced understanding of inter-cultural communication. In addition, the B.A. program qualifies students for a large number of M.A. programs.

The unique, yearlong mobility option allows IAS students to build a distinctive resume through an extended stay at an American university and/or one or more long-term internships. Employers appreciate the immense value of spending a full year in the U.S.!

Our students have been highly successful in getting internship positions at, for example, cultural institutions (i.e. film festivals, German-American institutes, museums), media outlets, international firms, and marketing agencies - both in the Tübingen-Stuttgart region and in the United States.

Международный обмен по программе обучения "Interdisciplinary American Studies"

All students of Interdisciplinary American Studies are strongly recommended to spend a period of time in an English-speaking country. This is an invaluable opportunity for students to improve their language skills and to immerse themselves in a different culture and professional and/or academic environment. With our integrated mobility option in the third year, we offer our students the opportunity to partake in the university‘s established exchange programs with more than fifty universities in the United States and Canada as well as in other Englishspeaking countries.

The additional year may be spent elsewhere, e.g. as an exchange student at one of our numerous partner universities in the US and Canada, or students may choose a job-related internship in Germany or abroad.

If you decide to take the integrated year abroad, you will gain two additional semesters (usually the 5th and 6th semesters), earning 60 ECTS extra credit points. For the integrated year abroad, you can choose between the following options, which may also be combined:

If you're enrolled in IAS without the integrated year abroad, you have until the 4th semester to change to IAS with the integrated year abroad.

Учебный план программы обучения "Interdisciplinary American Studies"

The B.A. Interdisciplinary American Studies (IAS) is a mono-bachelor program, meaning that you will not have to choose an additional minor ("Nebenfach"). The program can be completed in either three or four years, depending on whether you will use the mobility option to spend an extra year at a partner university abroad and/or doing internships. You can start the program during the winter or summer semester. The B.A. program consists of four main parts: The core curriculum in Literary and Cultural Studies, the elective curriculum, academic English, and professional skills.

Core Curriculum

During the first year, the basic modules in Literary and Cultural Studies will introduce you to the main methods and concepts used to study American literature and culture. Each of these modules consists of a lecture and a seminar, accompanied by a tutorial. In the advanced and focus modules, students deepen their knowledge of American literature and culture and apply the skills acquired in the basic modules in a series of thematic seminars. The Literary and Cultural Studies lecture series provides an overview of the history of American literature and culture, enabling you to identify connections between these fields.

Elective Curriculum

As an IAS student you will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in selecting topics for the three modules of the Elective Curriculum. Depending on your interests, you can take courses in fields as diverse as history, media studies, political science, sociology, art history, economics, or law. These courses are outside of the core curriculum, but should either relate to the study of America or deal with theories and concepts that are relevant to American Studies.

Academic English

Along with knowledge of the subject matter and theoretical background related to your program of studies, you will also acquire language skills in Written & Oral Communications courses, with the option of taking a translation course towards the end of your studies. The aim of these lessons in academic English is to teach you how to prepare and give presentations as well as write papers throughout your academic career.

Professional Skills

Professional skills (Schlüsselqualifikationen) are career-oriented skills reaching beyond the realm of academia. The University's Career Service offers a wide range of courses on journalism, digital humanities, international business and management, rhetoric and communication, academic writing, and many other subjects. In addition, students can get credits for internships, activities in student theater or music groups, software/programming courses or language courses at the University's Language Center.
