1. Goals of the M.A. International Relations and Development Policy

Graduates of the M.A. International Relations and Development Policy

• acquire key qualifications for professional fields in international organizations, non-governmental organizations and in the diplomatic service,
• have specific regional knowledge,
• acquire intercultural competence through study projects abroad,
• are familiar with the controversies of the theory development of international relations and globalization processes,
• are able to analyze the causes of violent conflicts, state failure and underdevelopment,
• are able to assess the functioning and structures of international political fields and the respective roles and interests of state and civil society actors, international and regional organizations and
• are able to assess the chances of success of various multilateral options for action for overcoming poverty and preventing and ending civil wars and interstate conflicts.

2. Profile

The M.A. from the Institute for Political Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen International Relations and Development Policy (IBEP) course combines sound theoretical training in the field of international relations (IB) with intensive training in the sub-area of ​​development policy (EP). The area of ​​development policy distinguishes political science at the University of Duisburg-Essen in a special way; With its spatial and institutional proximity to the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF), this branch of development policy has a scientific constellation that is unique in Germany. In addition to the relevant theories and topics of the IB - regional cooperation and integration, international organizations, globalization, international economic relations, etc. - the course therefore pays special attention to theories of global governance, peace and conflict research, North-South relations and the development policy practice.

3. Regional specialization, stay abroad and professional qualification

The degree program experiences a second unique selling point through its regional focus on at least three world regions: East Asia, Europe and Africa (primarily sub-Saharan Africa). The concentration and application of theoretical knowledge on these regions allow practical and application-related access to development policy issues. Against the background of the increasing demand for intercultural competence in the relevant disciplines of the social sciences as well as in development cooperation, graduates of the degree program are therefore equipped with profound knowledge of the regions mentioned. This targeted combination of political and regional science expertise provides students with the scientific skills for the IB subject area, which they can use directly for further scientific work as well as for the practice of development cooperation. The subject-related and timely component should be promoted through an eight-week stay abroad, which, depending on the inclination, can take on a more theoretical-academic or a decidedly practical orientation. After successfully completing the course, the graduates have the relevant skills for scientific and practical work in the field of international politics, development policy and development cooperation.

4. Master's thesis and exams

The thesis is written in the 4th semester in a maximum of four months. It must meet the basic standards of a diploma thesis and can also contain the presentation of the results of a study project. The master's thesis must be written in German or in a foreign language generally accepted by the examination board or in a foreign language accepted in individual cases. All oral and written exams can be in English.

The allocation of study places in the Master’s program in International Relations and Development Policy is based on the degree of qualification and the result of a selection interview; the degree of qualification carries the greatest weight.

The members of a selection committee rate the individual parts of the selection interview 1 to 6 with grades between 4.0 and 1.0. The worst impression is to be assessed with 4.0 and the best impression with 1.0.

A further evaluation is given for the conversation behavior (overall impression of the applicant, attitude to the conversation situation, linguistic expression, ability to argue, persuasion). 

The individual assessments and their total are recorded as a preliminary assessment added. The committee members exchange their respective individual assessments. A mean value is then formed from the two individual values, which is recorded in the protocol.

The overall result is the sum of the final grade or preliminary average grade weighted with 60%, which results from the submitted BA graduation certificate or the transcript of records, as well as the mean of the interview determined grades, which are weighted to 40%.
