The course covers the three major areas of German law:

Private law

regulates the relationships between legally equated natural or legal persons. In addition to a general part, this includes the law of obligations, property law, family law and inheritance law.

Public Law

regulates the relationship between the bearers of state power and the subjects of private law as well as legal aspects of the organization and function of the state. These include, for example, fundamental rights, state organization law, administrative law
and European law.

The criminal law

includes the legal norms by which certain actions are prohibited and subject to sanctions.

Successful studies qualify you not only for a single job description, but for a broad spectrum. You improve your prospects if you develop your own profile during your studies, e.g. in internships. The studies with the completion of the First State Examination qualify you for numerous advisory, administrative and other legal activities in public administration, corporations, companies, institutions of interest representation or international organizations. After passing the first state examination, after a 24-month preparatory service and passing the second state examination, you can work as a lawyer or in the judiciary. At the same time, with the second state examination, you acquire the "qualification for judicial office". A so-called predicate exam (grade at least “fully satisfactory”) is required for acceptance into the judicial or public prosecutor's office.

The department has a large number of partnerships with foreign universities that offer you exchange opportunities. To organize a stay abroad during your studies, please contact the contact person in the department. In addition, you have the option of completing the master's degree in Juris Internationalis (M.J.I.), with a focus on European and international law.

The study of law with the degree "First State Examination" can essentially be divided into four sections.

1. Intermediate examination

For the intermediate examination, you have to write eight exams in central areas of law during the first three or four semesters, six of which you must have passed by the end of the 6th semester.

The intermediate examination comprises a total of eight exams:

  • from private law the areas of introduction to private law, law of obligations (general and special part) and property law,
  • from public law, fundamental rights, state organization law and the general part of administrative law as well as
  • Criminal Law Special Part I and Special Part II.

2. Exercises for advanced learners

The focus of the following study phase is - in addition to courses in several sub-areas - the comprehensive exercises for advanced learners in private law, public law and criminal law.

3. Priority setting

In the further course of the course, a focus has to be chosen. The thematic focus of these areas can vary depending on the university. The focus comprises around 10% of the entire course. The following focus areas can be studied at the University of Giessen:

  • German and international family and inheritance law,
  • Labor law with social law,
  • Business Law,
  • International and foreign private and procedural law,
  • Constitution and Society (Public Law in the specialization),
  • European and international law,
  • Forensics.

In parallel to Sections 1-3, you must attend courses in other areas of law. The program is supplemented by basic and introductory events, events on methodology and key qualifications, as well as foreign-language courses. In addition, three internships of one month each at a court and two further stations have to be completed.

Legal English

For students of this course, the three semester technical language training "Legal English" is offered.

4. Preparation for the first state examination

The final exam preparation (UniRep) is used to in-depth repetition of the material in preparation for the 1st exam.

First state examination

If all required performance certificates have been successfully completed, you can register for the first examination. This consists of the state compulsory subject examination, which makes up 70% of the subsequent overall grade, and the university specialization examination, which is taken into account with 30% of the grade.

The compulsory subject examination includes:

  • two exams on private law,
  • two exams on public law,
  • an exam on criminal law,
  • an exam on labor, commercial or company law,
  • an oral exam with three parts: private law, public law and criminal law.

The examination in the focus area includes:

  • a term paper and
  • an oral exam.
