On the one hand, mathematics is the common language for describing structural and quantitative relationships in the natural, engineering and economic sciences. With the help of mathematical models, mathematical solution processes and their implementation on computers, it is possible to an ever greater extent to analyze, simulate and optimize complex processes in all of these sciences. On the other hand, basic mathematical research has made enormous progress in the last few decades, which in turn has found completely surprising applications, e.g. number theory / algebraic geometry in cryptography. Our society therefore needs a sufficient number of mathematically qualified specialists who are informed about the possibilities of mathematics. Today, mathematics is often even regarded as a key technology.
