Studying abroad usually takes the form of a semester abroad or an entire academic year. The University Medical Center Mainz offers a scientific preparatory course "NaWi-gation in Studium" for all new students before starting their studies.
1st Section of medical education
- 1st-4th Semester
- Attending lectures, exercises, seminars and internships
- When registering for the first section of the medical examination, i.a. Evidence of first aid training and three months of nursing.
- The aim is to train in basic medical and scientific subjects (medical terminology, biology, physics, chemistry, medical psychology, anatomy, physiology and biochemistry) with clinical references.
2nd Section of medical education
- 5-10th Semesters
- On site, in university medicine, students learn methods and techniques to recognize diseases in the human organism. In the individual departments of the university clinics, they acquire special knowledge in clinical medicine. The teaching in the cross-sectional areas is intended to provide an interdisciplinary view of the disease process.
- For all compulsory courses, evidence of performance must be provided for the teaching events during the course.
- When registering for the second section of the medical examination, a non-university internship in the hospital and doctor's office (internship) of four months must be demonstrated.

Practical year
- 11-12th Semesters
- The last year of the clinical phase of study is completed as a practical year in university medicine or at academic teaching hospitals. This covers a period of 48 weeks and serves an even more practice-oriented clinical training. The students practice practical skills in internal medicine, surgery and a clinical-practical electives.
