Molecular Biosciences and Productive Biosystems

The Molecular Biosciences and Productive Biosystems master's program offers the opportunity to acquire in-depth molecular biological knowledge in connection with microbes, fungi and plants as well as aspects of the application of these systems for the production of active substances and chemicals in the sense of white biotechnology. This contributes to the progressive development of the bioeconomy and thus addresses a socially, economically and scientifically highly relevant field of knowledge.

The course prepares students for research work in university and non-university institutions as well as for other activities in biological-biotechnological, (bio)chemical or pharmaceutical companies, teaching and research institutions, industries and authorities. The graduates are also prepared for further academic qualifications in national and international graduate programs.

Учебный план программы обучения "Molecular Biosciences and Productive Biosystems"

The course imparts both technical knowledge and skills as well as interdisciplinary competencies.

In the first semester, theoretical knowledge and practical skills are acquired in connection with the cultivation of microbes, gene expression and protein production in microbial host systems and the special organism group of fungi and protists.

In the second and third semester, knowledge is deepened in compulsory modules in the thematic pillars “Functional Tools”, “Productive Biosystems” and “Application Technologies”. The choice of courses from catalogs offers an individual focus. In both semesters there are also laboratory rotations based on the current research of the working groups involved in the course, in which the students strengthen their experience and skills in connection with independent scientific work. The students are integrated into two different, self-selected working groups and gain insights into the research process. They deepen their experimental knowledge and their methodological skills such as literature research and the derivation of working hypotheses as well as the planning, implementation and evaluation of experiments. By working in a team, they also acquire key qualifications such as communication and teamwork skills, work organisation, time management and project planning.

Other general qualifications such as foreign language skills are mandatory in another module with individually selectable content.

In the fourth semester, students use the knowledge and skills they have acquired to independently prepare their academic thesis. All activities are committed to good scientific practice.
