Molekulare Biotechnologie

The Bachelor in Molecular Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary course that provides students with a broad scientific education, from the basics of biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics to subjects such as molecular and cell biology, pharmacology, biochemistry, bioinformatics and process engineering. In the third year of study, students specialize in one of the subjects bioinformatics, biophysical chemistry or drug research. New developments in biomedical research, such as findings from genome and proteome research, genetic engineering, bioinformatics, drug development, diagnostics and biomedicine are taught in teaching and research. In addition, students can take courses in key skills such as academic English, rhetoric, presentation and management techniques.

Which interactions of DNA, proteins and other substances determine the function of a cell and even of an entire cell group? Which molecular changes lead to diseases and how can these be influenced at the molecular level? What innovative approaches are there to curing widespread diseases such as cancer?

In addition to biochemical and cell-biological techniques, a good knowledge of the chemical and pharmacological basics, physical measurement methods and computer simulations is indispensable for dealing with these questions.

An industrial internship is just as much part of the training plan as the teaching of soft skills such as scientific English, management strategies and presentation techniques.

In the first four semesters, there is a broad basic scientific education covering the areas of chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, bioinformatics as well as computer methods and process engineering. The students go through a concentrated study program in the form of lectures, seminars and internships.

In the 5th semester, students have the opportunity to choose a main subject from the three core areas of drug research, bioinformatics and biophysical chemistry in which they can specialize, including through a research internship.

In the 6th semester, the students work on a research project as part of their bachelor thesis in a working group of the IPMB or an institution involved in the course.

The majority of graduates go on to do a master's degree in Heidelberg, at another German university or abroad.

A special concern of the bachelor's program is the preparation of the graduates for a possible job in the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry. The students therefore complete a minimum six-week internship in a biotechnological or pharmaceutical company during their studies.

    In terms of research and teaching, the Faculty of Biological Sciences at Heidelberg University is one of the most attractive life sciences faculties in Europe. It covers a wide range of fields from molecular life sciences to biodiversity, including molecular biotechnology and pharmacy. Research questions are addressed with the help of all conceivable experimental and computer-aided methods from structural biology to systems biology.     The faculty is part of the unique campus in Heidelberg, the Neuenheimer Feld. The Neuenheimer Feld not only accommodates all of Heidelberg's natural science faculties and medicine, but also outstanding non-university research institutions. The members of the Molecular Life Sciences Heidelberg were very successful in the Excellence Initiative. Among other things, this has contributed to the development of the campus-wide core facilities, which greatly facilitate access to high-end technologies for research and teaching.

    We don't have "NC". The selection process is as follows: A ranking list is created based on the average Abitur grade, the grades in the upper-level courses in the core subjects German, math, English, biology, chemistry and physics, and other achievements. Other services include: "Youth research" or similar, relevant internships with a minimum duration of four weeks (no BoGy!), social commitment (leading position e.g. in the church, boy scouts, sports club etc.).

    The best approx. 250 applicants (out of a total of approx. 1200) on the ranking list will then be invited to selection interviews. Here, each applicant has two 15-minute opportunities to explain his/her motivation for the degree program in one-on-one interviews with one lecturer each. There are no specific "substance areas" that are queried. Those who are interested in molecular biotechnology will also deal with current topics in this field.

    For the final ranking, the results of the 1st ranking list and the selection interviews are then given equal weight, which means that the average Abitur grade only counts for one-sixth of the overall ranking!
